STAB is same type attack bonus, or the effect of a pokemon, say a blastoise, using the same move type as it, like water gun.

Actually, I am pretty damn sure it's been around since Gen I. I'd bet everything I have on it, that's how sure I am. Pokemon Academy in Colosseum 2 (that's Gen II) actually taught you all about it, but I've been using STAB since Pokemon Red.
