Welcome to Novelty Extraordinaire, or Novelty EX! I'd like to thank Foresterra for suggesting such a wonderful idea and Pokii for approving this! A group dedicated to those who like coming up with Novelties of their own and/or if they got the talent, create them through the art of spriting. If you don't know what a 'Novelty' is, here is a direct quote defining such:

Some Novelty Pokémon are made to represent a holiday or time of the year, whilst others are a unique Pokémon found in a video game or from an episode in the Animé. -Commander Wymsy

However, it isn't limited to just that meaning. It can be anything you want, just as long as people can get the gist of it. Note: This is just a spriting fan group inspired by the Novelty Pokemon seen on GPX+. Serves as a place for entertainment, not at all a Novelty nominee bank for the GPX+ staff.

Latest News: [3/19/2010] We have a chatroom now! I've also opened up job positions for a few people: Foresterra, who has been already my advisor to begin with, and recently, zbx, who will be the secretary, managing the member list and making sure the form has been filled correctly, and The Doctor from Galifrea, our current contest host. I'll think of what others can do to help this group more, maybe judges or someone to help me manage the dex, but I'm pretty picky when it comes to choosing for either particularly.

First and foremost, make sure you are familiar with GTS+ rules and how-to-post.
Splicing is allowed, as long as it's not a hybrid (see term in Helpful Corner under 'amalgamation'). Type-changed Pokémon and Amalgamon are acceptable.
No obscene or offensive designs.
Do not enlarge or make the Pokémon sprite smaller. Please keep it at its original size.
The size limit is now 80px x 80px (Width by height). Anything past those dimensions may be unaccepted.
You may use Pokémon accessories as bases, recolor or modify them however you wish creatively.
Sprites are to be pixel-shaded only. No tool shading (see term in Helpful Corner).
Images must be submitted in high quality and in transparency (contest submissions only). Save your image in either .png (recommended for MS Paint users) or .gif (if converted in Photoshop, GIMP, Iaza).
No harsh critique. Constructive criticism may be used, but with lighter terms, as to not provoke discouragement. We want to encourage our artists to improve, but not let them strive doing so.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. You will not be judged on what you put into your creations, as long as you are following the guidelines.
Even if you hadn't exactly followed through the instructions and the formats, you will not be reprimanded on your mistakes, but instead, in a respectful manner, be asked to fix them.
Everyone is welcome to help each other out on this thread.
Although the owner has no power to get rid of flamers and trolls, if you see someone is breaking a GTS+ rule, please report them to a moderator.

Once you've read all these rules, please put a icon on the join form as the Secret Pokemon and make sure you put it on the appropriate spot.

Terminology:
Pixel Shading
Excluding the flood fill or bucket tool, sprites are worked on pixel-by-pixel, mainly with the pencil tool, but the one-pixel line and shape tools [in Microsoft Paint] can be used as well, so the edges appear crisp and distinctly blocky.

Tool Shading
Advanced picture-editing programs such as Photoshop or GIMP have brushes that create an anti-alias effect, or make pixel art appear smoother and blurred. Techniques includes smudging, blurring, dodging, burning, and sharpening.

Pokésona
A Pokémon whose general nature represents a person. One can also have his/her favorite Pokémon personalized to suit his/her own style apart from the Pokémon's typical traits.

Fakemon
A made-up Pokémon. Not to be mingled in with hybrids (see 'amalgamation') and type changed Pokémon. Some Fakemon are Amalgamon albeit completely original created by used Pokemon parts modified.

Amalgamation
The combining of parts of Pokemon sprites. Also called fusions. There are several types of fusion: hybrids, type-changes, and Amalgamon.
Hybrids are like the mutt (mixed breed) version of Pokemon. They are two Pokemon crossed together to look like half one species and half the other to create another race (e.g. Bidopoke). Type-changed Pokemon are simply Pokemon whose general elemental type has been modified to another type.
Amalgamon are original Pokemon created from existing parts (e.g. Hallotomb - made from Spiritomb and Haunter parts, Shellderboy - made from Shellder and Machop parts,Cloysterman - made from Cloyster and Machoke parts).

Well, mine was made completely custom, rather than editing preexisting sprites. If you're planning to make custom sprites, it helps to have an official sprite on hand for reference, and to use it's colors if you're copying a style and want it to look even more official.

Well, it takes some practice. I find that it helps to sketch out the object using a light shade, then draw the lines over it, tweaking if necessary. Once you have the lines how you want them, decide on a lightsource and color and shade accordingly.

Oh, Corinne, I have a question, if you don't mind answering. I notice that in the rules, you mention not criticizing others' sprites. (Or, at least, the leader won't.) Does this just apply when the criticism is nothing but harsh? Maybe it's because I do so much spriting myself, but I like to comment on other people's sprites and show them way that they can improve. As long as I'm polite about it, is this okay? Just wanna make sure I'm not breaking any rules.

Ah. Yes, yes. I think I should say reword that part. You can critique, as long as it's constructive criticism, and like you said, not too harsh as to make the message sound discouraging. More like in a way to encourage them to improve. ^^; Yep... I'm editing that part.

I actually have like... little to no experience with spriting, but I'm a half-decent artist and a quick learner, and I've got a few ideas. I'd love to be part of a group like this where I could get tips and tricks from the more experienced. <3
