20,000 Corsola Under the Sea

Joey was lounging in a sun chair on the deck of the S.S. Starlight when Jet first cannon-balled into the nearby on-deck pool, casually flecking water onto Joey that dried quickly on his green-trimmed black t-style and shorts wetsuit, and upsetting an already flustered Claw. The sea air wasn't agreeing with the poor dear. The bird Pokémon instinctively edged his way towards Joey, before hopping to perch onto the backrest and nuzzle his trainer. Babylon, the new family member, was curled lightly upon his trainer's stomach, snoozing in the caressing sun in the cute, carefree, Eevee way of his. Joey reached down and petted the warm fur of the Pokémon and promptly swore it was the softest Eevee in the world. Claw squawked indignantly at this and fluttered off.

A scream of Poké-delight brought the primarily black-clad boy's attention back to the pool. Jet the Seel and Typhoon the Squirtle were playing a water roll goal game with Kimiko and Wally as the balls. The only problem was when the Igglybuff, Kimiko, inflated herself too much and started to drift from the water, where she would have to have a stern reminder from Jet and Typhoon.

Luckily, the comfortable cruise ship had a merchandise store where Joey was able to purchase his wet suit and the green composition notebook and pen he was currently using. Opened to the first page, an overwhelming blank page blazed at him. Why had he bought it? Perhaps it reminded him too much of the one he used while growing up and working nights at the Pyrite Hotel, having to lean towards the nearest flickering streetlight to see enough to write and reflect. Now, Joey looked around to see what he could fill this notebook with.

At least the day was nice. The sun was warming without being oppressive. People were leaning over the railing to watch the Wailmer and Gorebyss, and others were playing water volleyball in the pool while Pokémon played out of the way in other parts. There was a pleasant breeze every now and again. Joey watched the people around him and marveled, What makes them so happy?

His gaze fell upon each of his Pokémon in turn and then again on Vincent, who was lounging not far from him with his Eevee, Amazon, in his lap and was stroking her absentmindedly while reading a copy of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Then placing the pen to paper, Joey scribbled across the top, "What the hell am I doing?" Under that, he sketched out all the careers he could think of off the top of his head. Then he followed up with another column that listed Goals. This, he couldn't help but to leave blank. Underneath it, he doodled a picture of a trophy. Perhaps Artist wasn't in his future either.

PANE Pokemon

Twila breathed in deeply, savoring the salty sea air blowing in her face over the deck of the boat. It had only been a few days since she had been in Port Barley, and already the crowds had gotten to her. She did not do well in crowds, and the hustle and bustle of Barley was way too much to take in. She had to get away, so it was no surprise that she had found herself back on the docks looking for a nice boat ride to clear her head. She had bought a ticket for the S.S. Starlight in the early morning, so she had had plenty of time to think.

"What am I gonna do now? I found the plant; I cured Mai...what else is there to do? Should I go back home?" Twila mused to herself for a while, looking out at the great expanse of ocean seperating her from her home. For a moment she felt a little homesick. Then again, what was there to be homesick about? Her sister was no longer at home; she was probably trekking through all of Sinnoh right then. And she didn't even want to think about her aunt and uncle. They were never at home anyways. Suddenly, Twila felt a tap on her leg. She glanced down to see a tiny Ralts looking concernedly back up at her. Twila merely smiled and patted her head. "I'm alright Mai, I'm just wondering what I should do..."

"Ralts?" the little green-headed Pokemon asked as she cocked her head to the side. Twila could tell what she was asking: Why was she thinking about this? There was a whole new place right in front of her just waiting to be explored, so many things to see, and so many Pokemon - and possibly people - to meet. Why was she even thinking about going home?

Twila nodded and patted the little Pokemon's head again. "You're right," she said, standing up straighter and adjusting her bag, "I'm going to have some fun in my life, and that fun is going to start right now!" "...But," she slumped a little, "where to start? I guess this boat ride will help me figure it out. I always did do my best thinking out on the water." She grinned a little and looked back out over the sea. She could see a few Wailmers farther out in the ocean, jumping out of the water and splashing each other. "Yeah," she said, "I think another boat ride'll do me some good. Then I'll be able to figure out what I'm to do here. I just hope it doesn't turn out like my last boat ride..."

A splash of seawater roused Twila from her daydreaming. She turned back toward the deck to find her Pokemon playing with each other over a couple of deck chairs. She smiled as she watched Kimber, her Nidoran, chase Mai around a deck chair while Merle, her Makuhita, chased after Kimber, looking slightly nervous. Ever since Twila had gotten Mai back from Professor Rowan, Merle had been extra protective of Mai, making sure she ate her food and sleeping next to her at night. Twila thought it was pretty cute to watch. She let her eyes travel away from her Pokemon and towards the boat and its passengers.

There weren't as many as there were on the ferry from Canalave to Barley, which made Twila feel much less nervous. There were many trainers lounging in the deck chairs, their faithful Pokemon by their sides. There were also families who were presumably on vacation and young couples looking for a romantic boat ride on the ocean. Twila smiled a little at the sight of all of the happy people on this boat, and wondered how they came to be so happy.

However, there was one person that Twila could see who was not enjoying himself. He was sat on a deck chair, staring at a notebook with an emotionless expression on his face. She wondered why he didn't look like he was having fun, but left it at that. She would never approach a guy by herself for fear of turning bright red or - Arceus forbid - faint from nervousness. She shook her head, then proceeded to find a deck chair for herself. She sat a respectful distance away from the man and his Pokemon, and again focused on her own Pokemon's antics. She had looked back just in time to see Merle trip over his own feet, and bring both Mai and Kimber down with him. Twila giggled at the sight of the three of them tangled up in a pile, then set to work untangling them, all the while thinking about why the man in the deck chair looked like he was the only one not having fun.

Joey sighed at his notebook. There had to be more choices than that. He tried to think of all the people he knew, no...he didn't want to be a criminal. And he didn't want to be poor. That ruled out everyone from his childhood. He didn't want to run a daycare, but he knew enough to raise his own Pokemon properly, he was sure. Then another thought occurred to him. He tickled the sleeping Eevee on his midsection between its ears, rousing it peacefully. Its ears twitched before it promptly yawned, stretched, batted its eyes open, then curled up in the opposite direction and continued snoozing. Well, Joey thought. It's not like they hand out medals for sleeping. Oh, Joey did want medals. Medals, trophies, fame and money. The good life. Everything he thought to be beyond his reach in the dirty town of Pyrite. That's all it was, Pyrite. Fake gold. Shiny in representation, rust underneath.

Claw fluttered down to land by Joey's legs, and the trainer reached with his knee to rub the bird's feathers while speaking to him. "What about you, Claw? Have you ever thought about what you want to do with your life?" The Pokemon cocked his head and looked quizzically at his trainer. Joey knew why. He didn't plan beyond surviving. For the first time in his life, surviving wasn't necessarily the foremost issue anymore. After 17 years, he finally rose above the first step in Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs. And he had absolutely no idea what to do with it. All he could think to do was read.

Vincent let him borrow some books from his private collection. While he had ambushed Sebastian with the main trunk of them, he had managed to line his backpack with a couple good choices. Among his favored literary classics, he had also packed a few books on Pokemon with a variety of topics to battling, training, and breeding, as what Vincent called "well-rounded". Joey remembered arguing with him over it last night in the bunk room they shared. While carrying around the extra weight wasn't practical by Joey's standards, Vincent wouldn't back down his insistence. After awhile, Joey conceded. He remembered that during his days after leaving Pyrite that reading had been his main, and possibly his only source of any concrete education. Despite his lack of education, his intellect was showing good signs of retaining the information and thinking critically about it.

Joey reached into his bag next to his chair and exchanged his notebook for a volume on battling. The first few chapters focused on the very basic elements of battling, such as commanding a Pokemon and switching it out for a new one. He was quietly leafing through it when he was disrupted by a loud raucous caused by another trainer's three Pokemon. Joey didn't look up out of concentration, but he didn't need to. After collapsing in a pile amongst themselves and being untangled by their trainer, they were quickly at it again and the chase pursued a little too closely to Joey's chair, upsetting it, spilling himself, his Pidgey, and his Eevee onto the deck.

After shaking his head and righting himself, the Eevee Babylon promptly trotted over to Joey's bag, crawled in, and resumed his nap. Or so Joey assumed as he didn't hear the sound of a snack being sneaked. Although, he couldn't hear much of anything because he thought he was dying. He couldn't breathe. All he knew was that something very fat and unmoving was perched atop his back, and his short stature wasn't aiding him here. Claw was upset at the sudden turnover and started to peck at said Pokemon. When that wasn't producing the satisfactory results, he began flapping furiously and then his most powerful gust threw the Pokemon off of Joey, who recognized the Pokemon as a Makuhita.

That gust was more powerful than a gust...could it have been a whirlwind? Joey didn't have long to think since a Nidoran female came to the Makuhita's rescue. Although it wasn't much of a rescue since by this time Jet suspended playing with Wally in order to join the commotion, and he decided to put his own two cents worth in, in the form of an icy blast of wind, getting the Nidoran square on, then clapping manically at his accomplishment. Joey was recovered now and jumped up from the deck.

"Jet! Claw! That's no way to act. I don't recall giving a command. Return!" Simultaneously, Joey recalled the two frazzled and arguably pugnacious Pokemon. Kimiko was standing about his ankles now, and he knew that she would have been tugging on his pant leg had he been wearing pants and not the green-trimmed black wetsuit. The trainer of the three Pokemon was rushing over. Her Nidoran had an icy powder caked over it and her Makuhita was looked confused, and Joey just noticed that the third was a Ralts that had smartly stayed out of the fray.

Oh great, Joey thought to himself, now I have to apologize. Or something. Dealing with people was not his forte and his most desired wish at that moment would be to put his head down and walk away, but since meeting Vincent he liked to think he was above that. This girl didn't look intimidating, aside from her hair, Joey added as an afterthought. As she drew near, her Nidoran shook itself free of the powder and only looked a little cold. No, not in the physical sense, Joey amended, but there is such a glower coming from her. Once the trainer was standing before Joey, he started to articulate an apology, but the Makuhita edged himself in between his trainer and Joey. Quite taken aback, Joey's apology died in his throat and he half turned away, stalling by righting the upset furniture as it was before. Trying again, Joey apologized in a half-hearted, forced way.

"Sorry about my Pokemon. Claw can get pugnacious when he's upset and Jet just likes to have fun. I think they were just trying out new moves. It's been awhile since they've had a growth spurt. I'll keep them on a shorter leash until they learn some manners."

Now, no matter what the girl said, his gentlemanly duties were fulfilled. At least to his standards.

PANE Pokemon

"Merle, Kimber, no!" shouted Twila as her two Pokemon returned to their play-fighting, upsetting most of the deck furniture and the people in them. Mai shuffled over to Twila's side, not wanting to upset more people than the other two were already. Unfortunately for Merle, his clumsiness had returned with a vengeance, causing the poor yellow fighter to trip over his own feet and crash into the chair of the man that Twila had been puzzling over. The two rolled across the deck for a moment, ending with Merle sprawled across the man and looking like a turtle that had been tipped onto its back. Unfortunately for the poor man, Merle's legs were just too short to get him righted, and his body shape made it hard to roll over. Twila was about to rush over and pull Merle off the man when a Pidgey started to peck angrily at him, then proceed to use a strong gust attack that flung Merle several feet away. Kimber ran over to him, looking a little worried, then turned and glared at the small bird Pokemon. Twila could tell that she was angry.

"Kimber, calm dow-"she started to say, but Kimber had already started a charge towards the Pidgey. Her charge fell short as a Seel shot a blast of ice and snow right at her. The move bowled her over, leaving her covered in a small drift of snow. As the Seel applauded himself for what he had done, Twila could see Kimber shivering and glaring furiously in his direction. Twila sighed exasperatedly and wondered if she'd ever get Kimber to listen to her.

By now the man had recovered his footing on deck, and was reprimanding his Pokemon. "Jet! Claw! That's no way to act. I don't recall giving a command. Return!" Twila could see the apologetic looks on the two Pokemon's faces as they were swallowed up in red light.

Twila started walking over to where her two Pokemon were, with Mai trailing right behind her. She kneeled next to Merle and patted the top of his head. "Try to be more careful, will ya Merle?" she asked gently, earning a slightly embarrassed nod from the little fighter. Kimber had shaken off most of the snow and had trotted over to see if Merle was alright. Well, at least she gets along with them, Twila thought to herself as her Pokemon spoke to one another.

Kimber turned and gave the man a cold stare as he approached. He was probably furious that her Pokemon had upset him and his Pokemon. Twila wasn't even good at talking to people when they were in a good mood, so the prospect of being yelled at by a complete stranger made her eyes start to fill up with tears. Merle noticed this right away, and promptly got up and stood in front of her, causing the man to stop suddenly. He hesitated for a moment, then proceeded to pick up his deck chair. Twila inwardly sighed in relief; maybe he didn't want to talk to her at all. Then he turned back around, and the relief quickly turned again to nervousness.

"Sorry about my Pokemon. Claw can get pugnacious when he's upset and Jet just likes to have fun. I think they were just trying out new moves. It's been awhile since they've had a growth spurt. I'll keep them on a shorter leash until they learn some manners." Twila quickly looked down at the deck as her face began to turn a shade of pink. Why was he apologizing to her when it was her Pokemon who had knocked him off his chair in the first place?

"I-it's fine,"she stammered, and promptly turned cherry red. Merle stepped closer to her, glaring at the man all the while. Mai looked up at her concernedly, then reached up and took her hand. Twila smiled slightly at her Pokemon, and, feeling a little braver, said, "I have trouble controlling my Pokemon once in a - in a while too." She then turned her head away and blushed a darker shade of red, feeling embarrassed that she had just admitted that. Kimber snorted from a few feet away and proceeded to lick at her paw, completely uninterested in her trainer's nervousness. "I- I mean, I'm a new trainer and everything, so I don't know exactly how to- to control them yet." she winced at her own statement, then decided that it would be best to just stop talking and save herself from more embarrassment.

Joey didn't quite completely catch on to the girl's nervousness. In all his 17 years, human interaction hadn't been a priority, or a pleasantry. This girl looked harmless though. And her Pokemon looked arguably harmless. Admittedly, just reading in that battle book got him a little fired up for a battle. After quickly surveying her batch of Pokemon again, he thought to himself, I'm more experienced than this girl...surely I can take her. Then remembering Claw and Jet's uncalled for outbursts, he better thought this battle plan.

"Well, how about some practice to get your Pokemon to respect you? It won't happen by itself," he started tersely. "I challenge you to a 2 on 2 battle," he picked up his bag and shook out a now-rumpled Eevee, which his Igglybuff giggled at. "I'll be using these two, my Eevee and Igglybuff, named Babylon and Kimiko. No substitutions." Turning back to the girl, he finished, "How does that sound?"

For a moment, the girl looked meek at the sudden challenge, then recognition blazed through her eyes and she accepted. Joey nodded and started to find an appropriate place on the boat to battle. He recalled both his Pokemon as he walked around and scrutinized the boat's perimeter, seeing everything as a possible advantage or disadvantage during a battle. The girl trailed quietly behind him, politely not interrupting his thoughts.

The day was a sunny one with a light and pleasant wind. Only a few clouds could be seen in the bright blue sky. Some Wingull could be seen riding the thermals in the sky. A Mantine broke through the crest of a wave, floated for a bit, and then disappeared again into the trough of another wave. On the starboard side of the boat there were people lined up along the railing looking out across the horizon at the water spouts of a pod of Wailord and Wailmer. A little girl in a flowery pink dress with periwinkle blue clasps gurgled in the direction of the water Pokemon while her two loving parents firmly clasped her hands on either side to make sure her healthy enthusiasm didn't send her overboard, and they were calmly and excitedly explaining things about the Wailmer to her. Joey's heart panged at the sight of them. Why wasn't his family like that? Walking down the line of people to the stern end of the boat, Joey saw a little boy sitting atop his father's shoulders. When the boy wanted down, the father lively picked him off and threw him up a little bit to catch him in a hug before setting him down, the small boy laughing and the father smiling. Joey's heart tore at the seams. Hardening himself, he continued on down the railing.

Towards the stern of the boat, a small, simple battle arena was marked out on the deck where two trainers were finishing up. A few of the people on deck watched with half-interest and quickly dispersed after the burly sailor's Machoke finished his opponent's Butterfree off with a cross-chop. The trainer moped as he recalled his Pokemon, "I thought she was stronger than that. She just evolved..."

The sailor walked off with his Machoke after a confident high-five as another sailor was glaring at him, most likely to get back to work. Over his shoulder, the sailor offered, "Type match-ups aren't everything in a battle."

The arena cleared and it was open for Joey and Twila to use. Joey quickly claimed one side after conferring that one side offered no more advantage than the other, as the sun was pretty much even in the sky. It must have been close to noon. At this end of the boat, there was less decoration or furnishings than at the bow of the boat. Just the battle arena and a bit farther back a built in pay telescope and other tourist items. Joey surveyed the masts, thinking it would be cool to have a battle up there, but since it wouldn't be feasible for any of his Pokemon, save Claw, he didn't consider it further. However, some movement among the masts caused his attention to flicker back up. Finding nothing interesting, he focused back on the battle before him.

"Remember, 2 on 2, no substitutions." Joey started, then he lightly tossed a Pokeball forward, and his first Pokemon was released in a flash of bright red light and a swirl of hearts. In the midst of the hearts, the form of an Igglybuff took shape and stepped nimbly down on the arena in front of her trainer. It took Joey a moment to remember why hearts accompanied her entrance. They were from the practice contest in Port Barley! Now he remembered! Oh..now he remembered...all the embarrassment that transpired that night. He shook it off. This was a new battle. A regular battle. None of the fancy stuff to worry about.

He turned to face his opponent. "Your move."

SaphireShadows

Twila waited uncomfortably for the man to speak, looking anywhere but at him. She was about to just walk away when he said, "Well, how about some practice to get your Pokemon to respect you? It won't happen by itself. I challenge you to a 2 on 2 battle." Then he took up his bag and shook a slightly rumpled Eevee out of it. Despite the rumpled appearance the Eevee looked quite pampered; its coat was lustrous, and shone in the afternoone sunlight. Then Twila heard a tiny giggle from the man's feet, which turned out to be an Igglybuff. She was quite cute, as all baby Pokemon are, and seemed to be quite cheery. Twila smiled slightly at the little balloon Pokemon, then snapped her attention back as the man said, "I'll be using these two, my Eevee and Igglybuff, named Babylon and Kimiko. No substitutions." He turned to look at her - to which she hurriedly looked back down at the deck - and said, "How does that sound?"

For a moment Twila almost declined the offer, thinking that there was no way she could stay cool in a battle against this man, that she would faint before she could even make a move. However, and sudden squeeze from her right hand and she knew that Mai was encouraging her to accept. She believed in her, so what was stopping her from believing in herself? Squeezing the little psychic Pokemon's hand, she looked straight into the man's eyes and nodded, then followed him as he sought out the battlefield.

As they wound their way through crowds of happy passengers, Twila set to work on a strategy. She knew that Merle would be the most helpful in this battle given his type advantage, so she decided to use him first. She didn't bother returning her Pokemon to their Pokeballs as they walked along the deck; they were smart and could easily keep up. Plus, the thought of them staying in their balls and not being able to enjoy this beautiful day seemed a crime within itself. A pod of Wailmer and Waillord on the starboard side distracted Twila from her strategizing. Many people had lined the railing to watch them, including a few families. This brought back memories of when she would go Wailmer watching with her parents when she was little. Her father would hold her up on his shoulders so she could get a better look while her mother would quickly snap photos. She hung her head as she thought of how she would never be able to see them again. A small flickering flame of jealousy ignited in her as she watched a couple hold onto their child as she enthusiastically gestured toward the whale Pokemon. But as soon as it had come, the feeling was extinguished, leaving nothing but an empty feeling in the pit of her stomach. It was then that she wondered whether the man that she was following had any family, and if he missed them terribly as he journied around the world. Her musings were cut short however as the battlefield came into view.

Twila watched as two trainers finished their battle. A frighteningly strong looking Machoke had just finished off a beautiful Butterfree with a Cross Chop as the two walked up to the field. Twila just managed to catch the Machoke's trainer, a sailor who probably worked on the ship, tell the Butterfree's trainer that type match-ups weren't everything. Twila made a mental note of this as the two walked away, leaving the field clear for her and the man to begin. Without a word, he walked over to a side of the field, leaving Twila to take the opposite side. She waited patiently as he surveyed the field, and she took the time to do the same. It was a clear day with little wind; a perfect day for battling. "Remember, 2 on 2, no substitutions," the man said, making Twila jump a little. He tossed a Pokeball onto the field, and it erupted in red light and a swirl of floating hearts. Twila smiled as the little Igglybuff - named Kimiko as Twila remembered - appeared in the midst of the swirling display.

"Your turn," she heard the man say, and she thought hard as her Pokemon crowded around her. Merle looked as though he might burst from excitement, Mai was staring intently down the field at the little Igglybuff, and Kimber was...where was she? Twila looked around for a moment and spotted her some distance away, looking bored and uninterested. Ignoring her Pokemon's behavior, she turned back to her two more eager Pokemon, and made her choice.

"All right Merle, let's do this," she called to her Makuhita, and he quickly ran onto the field. "Maku! Makuhita!" he yelled excitedly as he ran around the field. "Merle, pay attention please!" Twila called anxiously as the yellow fighter tripped once again over his own feet. She sighed as he righted himself and calmed down enough to listen. "All right, let's start off with Focus Energy!" she called, and Merle tightened himself up, heightening his accuracy. 'Let's hope that'll help...' Twila thought to herself as Merle stared back at Kimiko, waiting for her to make a move.

LSP

A Makuhita, interesting choice, Joey thought. Seeming like quite the excitable Pokemon, Joey wondered if it were at a high enough level to even learn a fighting type attack yet. He figured it best not to risk it. Kimiko, being as young as she is, could only probably take a move or two at the most before she collapsed. Would he let it get that far? Joey knew he had to keep Kimiko safe.

"Kimiko! Start off with a charming Sing attack!" Since she never got to practice this combo before, it took her a minute to realize that she was supposed to use Charm and Sing at the same time. Starting off with a long note, she twirled and emitted a heart shaped illusion from her body that crossed the arena and smacked the Makuhita right in the head, making it less inclined to attack powerfully the small pink Pokemon. Unfortunately, all it may have done is counter-effect the Focus Energy. She kept twirling in her Sing Attack and it wafted over to the Makuhita. Once her song ran down, Joey quickly ordered, "Now, Defense Curl!"

SaphireShadows

"Kimiko! Start off with a charming Sing attack!" he called to his Igglybuff. Twila simply stared confusedly...until she realized he was combining two attacks into one. Too late, she saw the floating hearts make contact with Merle, and the song afterwards. Mentally smacking herself, she tried to call to the Makuhita, who was sleeping standing up. "Merle! Merle, come on, wake up!" she called, hoping he would wake. He managed a grunt in his sleep, and then fell face first onto the battlefield. Twila held her face in her hand as Merle lay on the ground snoring like a freight train. She kept calling to him as the man called for the Igglybuff to use Defense Curl. Hopefully she could wake him up before he started ordering physical attacks.

LSP

Kimiko quickly tucked herself as hard as she could, then unrolled. It was important to get her physical defense up. From the looks of it, she wouldn't be faster than the Makuhita. And she needed all the time she could get.

"Kimiko, another Defense Curl! Then use Charm!" she tucked herself in again, and this time upon springing back open, the motion flung some more hearts that bounced off the sleeping bulk of the Makuhita. Joey dearly wished there were some way to increase her speed. Any agility would have helped her quickly dodge away from the Makuhita's attacks once it wakes. Unfortunately, this was not the case.

"Kimiko, one more Defense Curl and Charm combo," Joey ordered his Pokemon. He only hoped he could keep on building up her defense while lowering the opponent's attack. It could be his only hope.

SaphireShadows

"Come on Merle! Wake UP!" Twila yelled onto the field as the little Fairy Pokemon at the other end kept tucking itself up in a ball and flinging Attack-reducing hearts at Merle. Twila sighed in relief as the yellow fighter stirred, getting up onto his feet once again. He shook himself to dispell the lingering sleepiness in his eyes, and looked to his trainer for further commands. "That's more like it!" Twila yelled excitedly, "Now, let's see you use your Arm Thrust Merle!" And with that the Makuhita lunged forward, arm outstretched, aiming right between the Igglybuff's eyes. Twila knew that the attack would not be as powerful since he had been hit with all of those Charm attacks, but it would still take a nice little chunk out of the Igglybuff.

LSP

Joey saw the Makuhita stirring, and did the only move he could think of.

"Kimiko, use Defense Curl, now inflate yourself like a balloon!" Joey commanded her to do something she often did for fun. It wasn't quick enough to get out of the way of the Arm Thrust, but it didn't have to be. When the Arm Thrust connected, her now stretched rubbery body absorbed most of the impact and sent her flying, mostly upward due to the angle of impact. From the looks of the move, it gave the impression that the Makuhita was playing volleyball.

"Now, deflate and dive in fast for a Pound attack on the Makuhita!" The Igglybuff twirled and somersaulted a few times, throwing off Charm hearts, before flipping into her deflated form and plummeting down in perfect trajectory to Pound the Makuhita. Joey inwardly groaned, "Now she's just being fancy...I didn't tell her to do anymore charm attacks. Why won't my Pokemon listen to me?" Although, Joey conceded that she was mostly listening to him, and for now that would have to do.

SaphireShadows

Twila half giggled at the sight of Kimiko bouncing off Merle's arm; it just seemed too funny. It looked like Merle had just served a volleyball into the air. Merle was more confused than amused, and stared curiously at the soaring Igglybuff. Mai was watching the battle with intense interest, not letting her eyes stray from the two battling. Kimber, however, was sitting on the sidelines, staring lazily out over the ocean. Twila repressed an image of her kicking the small rabbit Pokemon into a deckside pool and refocused on the battle.

"Now, deflate and dive in fast for a Pound attack on the Makuhita!" Yelled the man, and Kimiko flipped around in the air, spewing off Charming hearts before plummetting back down towards Merle.

"Dodge it, Merle!" called Twila, and Merle flung himself to the left with speed that belied his girth. Twila watched as Kimiko missed and flung herself right into the ground, a sight which made her wince in sympathetic pain. Setting her feelings aside, she called to her Pokemon, "Merle, use Tackle while she's still recovering!" With more unreal speed, the Makuhita plowed his way towards the smaller Pokemon, ready to run her into the ground.

LSP

"Kimiko, return!" Joey withdrew his sniffling Igglybuff in a red flash of light, which the Makuhita stumbled his tackle through before catching his balance. He swiveled, looking confused.

"I forfeit this round. Makuhita is the winner." Joey knew there was no way to dodge the tackle attack, and he couldn't bear to see his baby Pokemon tackled so ruthlessly. She had been through enough of a battle for her age. Plain and simple.

"Ready for the next round?" Joey called to his opponent, getting ready to fling the Pokeball to release his next combatant.

SaphireShadows

Twila watched as Kimiko was sucked back into her Pokeball. She understood why he had returned her: she would not have wanted a Pokemon as young as her to get trampled by Merle either. "Come back here Merle," she called to her Makuhita, and without question he came shuffling back to her side. 'Well, at least he listens to me,' she thought to herself as Merle started conversing with Mai. She looked a bit worried as she spoke her name, but Merle just shook his head and smiled. Twila caught Kimber rolling her eyes at the two out of the corner of her eye.

"Ready for the next round?" the man asked, Pokeball at the ready. She would really have to ask his name; it seemed bad manners that she knew his Pokemon's names and not his. She'd ask after the battle, that is, if she could get it out of her stuttering mouth.

"All right, let's go Mai!" Twila said to the Ralts clutching at her leg. Mai nodded once and gracefully stepped out onto the field. She focused intently on the Pokeball in the man's hands, and waited silently for her opponent to appear.

Joey glanced at his Pokeball in his hand. Babylon would start out fresh against the Ralts, but even if he should best it, he still had the Makuhita to take out in order to score a win. Or should Joey just take the tie, if the little Eevee could take out the Ralts? Even while mulling it over, Joey released his Eevee in a flash of red light, and the Pokemon was clearly looking around for the seals that were not there, and was obviously disappointed in the lack thereof. But it regained itself and got into a battle pose.

"Babylon, I need you to work really hard, okay?" The Eevee looked back in the corner of his eye and nodded with a quick, verbal, "Eee."

Joey had to quickly call up all the knowledge he could about his Eevee and the Ralts it faced. Weren't Ralts supposed to be bigger than that? Sizing them up, he thought it might be possible for Babylon to out run it, but he couldn't be sure. And oh! It's a psychic type! It can probably teleport! Why didn't he think of that before! He began to regret his decision to use Kimiko earlier. She could have sung this one to place to keep it in one spot. But no, wasn't Ralts one of those Pokemon that had more than ability, and didn't one ability copy the status effects onto the opponent? If only he could remember! He thought about his PDA in his bag, but no, it would take too much time than he was already taking and it gave sparse information anyways.

In the end of all his rationalizing, he decided to stick to the usual strategy.

"Babylon, use Sand-Attack and follow up with a Tail Whip, if you can!" The Eevee rushed forward and stopped suddenly, spraying sand that Joey didn't remember being there a moment before. The cloud of sand flung toward the small Ralts and then the Eevee did a 180-pirouette action using the momentum from the sliding Sand-Attack and then waving his tail towards his opponent in a sweeping motion which seemed to propel the sand. The small puppy Pokemon was clearly dramatizing all his efforts, proving his true purebred breeding and contest roots.

Oh Lord, Joey thought, he's such a ham.

SaphireShadows

Mai stiffened as she saw her opponent appear in a flash of red light. An Eevee, Twila thought, well, no type advantage here... Twila quickly thought up a strategy. Her time in Barley was not wasted, she had trained her Pokemon every day, uncovering their new attacks as they battled wooden sticks stuck in the ground, or a small boulder in a city park. She had tried to coax Kimber to train harder, but she was having none of it, and chose to mostly sit on the sidelines and watch her two companions better themselves. Despite that, Twila had come up with a clever strategy with Mai that might just get her her first win.

Twila's attention snapped back as the man on the other end of the field called out to his Pokemon. "Babylon, use Sand-Attack and follow up with a Tail Whip, if you can!" These Furoh boats must have sand underneath their battlefields... Twila thought to herself as the Eevee kicked up sand into Mai's face, following with a few dramatic swishes of his tail.

Grinning at the little pup's enthusiasm, Twila turned to her own Pokemon and commanded, "Mai, use Double Team, then Teleport!" And suddenly one Mai turned into ten, and they all disappeared and reappeared in unison every couple seconds. Twila nodded, satisfied with her Pokemon's work. This little trick had worked perfectly in the one battle she had fought in Barley, so she was quite confident that it would work in this battle.

LSP

Babylon twirled on the spot, trying to chase the Ralts circle that disappeared and reappeared at different intervals around him. It wasn't working, and Joey saw that.

"Babylon, stop moving! You're only confusing yourself. Stand still. Brace yourself." The Eevee did as it was told, panting hard to catch its breath. It was getting frustrated. "Babylon, relax." The Pokemon visibly relaxed. Joey thought hard. The Ralts would most likely know some Psychic move from a distance, so he had to protect against that. And with its current move there was no way to get an attack in. Attacking right now would be redundant since he didn't know the real one from the illusions. Quite frankly, this combination shocked him, although his face didn't betray it.

Joey had the Eevee do all he could think to do with its limited move pool, and that was to copy the Ralts's strategy. Make himself hard to hit.

"Babylon, perform the Sand-Attack in a circle! It's tornado time," Joey called out to his Pokemon. Luckily, his Pokemon was competent enough to figure out a way to do so, holding his left paw out and using his three remaining legs to spin himself around in a tight circle. His tail and paw both kicked up sand in sporadic torrents of upward spiking sand. Even if it didn't hit the Ralts, hopefully it would have trouble using a psychic attack if it couldn't see the Eevee clearly, or deflect it in some way so Babylon could recover soon enough to tackle the Ralts? Joey wasn't sure if it could perform a Psychic attack while teleporting all the time anyways.

Now, he waited to see what the Ralts would do.

SaphireShadows

Twila inwardly cursed the hidden sand on the battle field as Babylon sprayed a tornado of sand at all of the Mai copies. Teleporting kept most of the sand from blinding them, but not all of it. "Mai, Double Team again!" she called, and the ten Mais became fifteen. "Now run in a circle!" and the copies stopped Teleporting and all ran in a circle, making a green and white blur around the Eevee. "Keep running and use Confusion!" she called, and the real Mai focused her mind amidst the blur and let loose a beam of Psychic energy into the middle of the circle. Twila watched on hopefully as the Mai copies began to slow. Mai's technique was perfect, but Twila knew that the next thing they would have to work on was her endurance.

LSP

Sand sprayed in an arc over the Eevee. While it blocked some of the brunt of the attack, the main psychic attack hit the Eevee right on the side, and the clashing momentum sent him spinning across the ground. Standing up wobbly, the little Pokemon surveyed himself and saw that his shiny fur was now all dirty! On the verge of distraught, it turned its focus engagingly on the Ralts, which more copies of were running around Babylon. But they started to slow.

"Now's our chance, Babylon! Get out of the circle and run around the ring in a Tackle until you find the right one!" Using his swiftness to his advantage, Babylon sprinted to run around the circle of Ralts, speeding through each illusion in a puff of dissipation until finally, one Ralts looked behind it in horror as Babylon approached, then made contact with a physical apparition at last. Both Pokemon went flying, and Babylon landed on top of the Ralts.

"Tail Whip," Joey ordered. The Eevee situation itself to smack the Ralts again and again in the face with his tail, and keeping it pinned down.

SaphireShadows

Twila fumed as she watched her Pokemon get Tackled to the ground, then get smacked in the face over and over. It wasn't like it was hurting her - how could that fluffy tail hurt anything? - but the sight just made her furious. Mai was just as furious, and kept growling as the tail smacked her over and over again. "Mai, Confusion now!" Twila yelled, and she let out another burst of Psychic energy. There was no way that Babylon would be spared from the full force of the attack, given that he was right on top of Mai. Twila just wondered if it would be enough to knock him out.

LSP

Babylon was knocked off the Ralts and rolled a few feet away. Looking dirty and bruised, the small Pokemon staggered to its feet, a look of exasperation in his eyes. The small Pokemon looked back at his trainer and ran over to him, lacing himself around his shoes and timidly gnawed on his left pant leg. Joey looked down at the small Pokemon and nudged him a few times to no avail.

Are you serious? Joey fumed internally. You're just giving up? Had enough of getting hurt for one day? Then the little Pokemon looked up at his trainer while still latched onto the pant leg and flashed him the saddest puppy eyes. He looked so out of his element.

"But you're bred for contest battles, right? A battle's a battle," Joey vocalized his concluding thoughts. Picking up his Eevee and gently tugging him loose of his pant leg, he set him down inside the arena and scooted him forward. The Eevee, in a sitting position, glumly resisted.

"Just one more Tackle, please?" The Eevee faltered and danced a bit on his toes, expounding his discomfit. Then he promptly turned and ran back to Joey, jumping into his arms and fishing his Pokeball out of Joey's front scrubs pocket, returned himself. Joey placed the Pokeball back into his pocket calmly, then debated internally over what course of action he should take.

Should I let this go? What would he do next time if I asked him to battle? Would this become a habit? Joey concluded that there was nothing more to do at that moment. Turning to his opponent, he nodded and congratulated her, his face betraying none of his inner anguish.

Then he turned and walked away as fast as he could, heading below deck.

SaphireShadows

Twila watched as the little Eevee ran back to his trainer, apparently having had enough. She wasn't mad about not finishing the battle - technically she had won anyways - but she did feel a little sorry for Babylon. Apparently he was not used to battling. Mai looked worriedly towards the trainer - apparently she was concerned that she had harmed the Eevee in some way.

"Come here Mai," Twila called, and Mai ran back as fast as her little legs could carry her. Twila picked her up and started to walk towards her battle partner, intent on at least stuttering through a request for his name. However, before she could get over to his side of the field, he nodded towards her and walked away...quite quickly as a matter of fact. Twila frowned and watched his back as he walked across the deck, unsure of whether to follow him and ask if he was all right or not.

She followed him for a ways, her other Pokemon catching up with her, trying to decide what the right thing to do was. He headed below deck, where there was a restaurant and a bar, and a little gift shop that sold Pokedolls and other things. Twila made a quick note of where it was and continued her internal struggling. Suddenly, Mai tapped her shoulder from her perch in Twila's arms and nodded towards the man, a clear indication that she should go talk to him. "Hey," Twila blurted out, turning a bright red as she did so, "Umm...I n-never caught your...that is, w-what's your n-name?" She cast her eyes downward immediately, hoping that the blood rushing through her head wouldn't make her faint.

LSP

Joey made it below deck and into the restaurant before the girl caught up to him. He was mildly surprised to find her following him through the crowds. He was usually better than this at losing people. Clearly, his mind was not in the right place.

He wound his way amongst tables in the restaurant before seating in a cove near the back. The lighting in the restaurant had a delicate ambiance and the decorations clashed with the sea theme of the restaurant. Apparently, it had a more classier theme with red velvet tablecloths and the low lighting, but paintings of blue water Pokemon on the wall and the appropriately-sized Politoed lamp in the center of Joey's table clashed with the red. Of course, Joey hardly noticed at all.

The girl slid into the chair opposite him. While Joey inwardly groaned, she said, "Umm...I n-never caught your...that is, w-what's your n-name?" Although while he was convinced their social interaction had ended on the battle field, Joey consented to indulging in some more. The environment won him over.

"Joey Sweet," he answered, "and yours?"

Upon closer inspection, Joey caught a vibe that the girl was uncomfortable. Joey quickly checked his clothes and made sure everything was in order. Considering how she was acting now, Joey credited her for following him in the first place. It showed initiative, at the least.

Joey didn't hear if she answered or not, because at that moment a well-dressed waiter swooped in and laid menus in front of each person, subtly frowning upon the state of Joey's appearance and took their order for drinks. Joey ordered a caramel macchiato. Not exactly his presumed style of drink, but being in a new place prompted him to explore this tastes.

Then, after the waiter had taken the girl's order he started scanning his menu for what he wanted to order for dinner, and made sparingly conversation with her. Hopefully he could occupy himself with menu long enough to eschew over-thinking that he was partaking in a social convention of communion with someone of the opposite sex.
After all, he had never done this before.

"Joey Sweet," he answered, "and yours?" Twila flinched; she hadn't counted on being asked a question back. Thankfully, a waiter came round at that exact moment and asked for their drink orders. Twila was just about to say no...but she was here already, why not? Joey ordered a caramel macchiato, and the waiter jotted down his order, then turned to her.

"Oh," Twila said, quickly skimming through the drinks. Ordering was much easier for Twila; you could tell the waiter what you wanted without having to look up from your menu. "Umm, I'll have a hot tea, please?" The waiter nodded impatiently - though Twila did not see it - and jotted her order down, then turned on his heel and quickly walked away. Twila then turned nervously back to Joey and said, "M-my name's Twila...Twila Reanne." She then dove behind her menu, trying her best to use it as an Invisibility Cloak.

A quick tap on her shoulder made her jump. She turned to find Merle, Mai, and (astonishingly) Kimber looking up at her with pleading eyes. "No, no, no. No people food for you guys. I don't want you all getting chubby on me!" And then they gave her...the eyes. The pleading eyes that just sort of melt the heart and make you give in to whatever they want. "Oh, all right! All right! But just this once, okay?" All three of them cheered and nuzzled her hands and arms in thanks. Even Kimber, though she quickly stopped and laid back down on the floor at her heels. Twila grinned, so Kimber did like her. Well, at least a little.

Turning back to her menu, she looked through the choices and tried to decide what she should get for all of them. It was tough, seeing as there were so many choices. It didn't seem possible that a restaurant on a boat could have that many choices, but there they were. Giving up for the moment, she laid her menu flat on the table and sighed.

"So, you don't keep your Pokemon in their Pokeballs, huh?" Joey asked, still perusing his menu.

Twila was caught off guard, so only an "Umm" escaped her lips at first. She cast her eyes downward and stammered, "Y-yeah. It just...seems a shame that they should s-stay inside their balls w-while I enjoy being outside. It...it just doesn't seem fair...to me, that is." She picked up her menu again and tried desperately to find something that she wanted, but it seemed like nothing she saw sounded appetizing. Feeling like the silence was worse than talking, she decided to try to converse again. "S-so...where are you g-going?" She said it so quietly that she wondered if he had heard her at all.

Soup, she decided at last, At least soup won't stick in my throat...like all of my words seem to.

Joey noticed that the girl's attention was suddenly drawn downward. He subtly leaned to the side of the table to look, to see three arguably cute Pokemon begging for scraps. He couldn't imagine why they weren't in their Pokeballs. After all, she did battle him, so she must be a trainer of some sort, right? And wasn't it a sign of a tamed Pokemon to remain inside its Pokeball? He casually asked her this and meditated on her response. While it did hold some logic, he maintained that he would keep his Pokemon in their Pokeballs when the time called for it. For instance, it was the one thing he felt he could control his Pokemon about. Recently, he's had a bit of a control problem that seemed unsettling. Perhaps because he never tried to actually control them before; he never had to?

"S-so...where are you g-going?" Joey heard her, just barely. She spoke so softly, and was showing every social gesture that she didn't want to be here, at least Joey thought, so why was she here? Joey then considered that he must seem to be acting the same way. But then again...he had sat down here first. He was there on his own terms. Taking a look around at his environment, that he could only modestly call "luxurious", and remembering how he felt back in Vincent's house. How he longed to be one of the affluent! Someone who deserves to live! Someone worthy of a future! Perhaps...he could start now. No one needs to know his origins, to know that he's out of his element. All he had to do is pull it together, and try to pull off some social graces. First, he had to guess what those were.

Putting down his menu and turning his attention to the girl, Twila, he answered her question.

"I'm traveling to Fidona," he started, and he was about to finish, "looking for fame and adventure," but should he be that blunt, to just come out and express his intentions? Did he even know his own intentions? Since being completely on his own, he had admittedly been acting more impulsively than usual. But he could. And he loved expressing that he could. Since he felt he had to follow up his statement with something, he finished with, "I hear there's a gym and contest hall, and it's probably an awesome place to get some training in." He started to get back to his menu, then he hurriedly added while trying to keep composed, "What about you?" It was considered polite to ask the other person, right?

Then, he did go back to scanning his menu, selecting what food he would like, keeping in mind he would have to pocket some for later. He estimated what money he had left in his bag. Everything on the menu was so expensive...he would have to be smart to make it last. What lasted the best? Carbs? What would be easy to carry? No seafood, although he thought shrimp would be awesome. It's yucky to carry and spoils quickly. He finally decided on mozzarella and bread sticks with ranch. As far as he knew, all his Pokemon would enjoy it. Hopefully the food would come with dinner rolls or something, but if not he figured he could make due.

Putting his menu down and keeping his order in mind, he tuned in to what the girl Twila was saying. Hopefully, he could pull this off and look dignified.

"Oh, w-well..." she really didn't know what to say. She had had a reason to be in Furoh, but now..? She wasn't sure whether to tell him that she had no purpose to be here or not. Thankfully, at that moment the waiter came back and placed their drinks unceremoniously in front of them, then stood there looking bored as he waited to take their food orders. Twila ordered a bowl of chicken soup and a plate of garlic cheese bread for her three Pokemon. The man wrote down her order and turned towards Joey to get his order. Feeling that she had no choice but to answer his question, she began again.

"Well...I'm not really sure w-why I'm here. Originally, I was trying to find this p-plant. You see, my Ralts was, was poisoned when I c-caught her, and P-Professor Rowan's lab didn't, didn't have the antidote. So that's why...why I originally c-came here. But I found the p-plant, so now...I don't know what I'm going to do..." she said this last part more to herself than to Joey. It was a real problem: if she didn't have anthing to work towards here, what was she going to do? She wasn't one to sit around and do nothing. She needed to have a goal to work towards. "That's why I'm on this boat. Umm...see, I, I do my best th-thinking on, on boats. So, I thought that...maybe a b-boat ride would help me to, umm, figure out what to do next?" She looked up from her lap to see what Joey would think. Would he think her silly to be in a strange place without a plan? It made her nervous. Mai could feel this and climbed up into her lap, surveying the table top and Joey curiously. Twila relaxed and started to pet Mai's head, grateful that she was sensitive to her emotions.

Joey nodded slightly. He thought going to a foreign land to look for an obscure antidote for a Pokémon she hardly knew was admirable. Deep in thought, Joey struggled to realize if he would have done the same in the situation, or for any of his Pokémon. Claw, Jet, Kimiko, and now Babylon swam through his mind in a montage. If they wouldn't obey him, then why would he owe anything to them? But...there was something there that he didn't understand yet. A feeling he couldn't comprehend, some connection, especially with Claw.

He listened to the rest of what Twila had to say, and then it was time to order their food. Before it came Joey and Twila exchanged some more questions and answers. Joey was curious about her training methods and past battle experiences and he shared his adventure in the Barley Practice Contest Hall. Then the waiter came with the food in almost no time. They ate in silence as Joey guessed the girl was too shy to bring anything else up, and he didn’t mind at this point since he was too focused on eating, an activity very near and dear to his heart.

It had to be. It was survival, and food had never really been this easy to get. Even in Agate Village, he felt like a burden, and took as little as he could from people, but scrounged furiously for leftovers afterwards. Claw joined him in this, but Jet and Kimiko always had all they could eat. They were brought up different from Joey and Claw. They were somehow better, had more of a right to live, had people that cared about them, were bred with purpose and not just accidents. Joey wondered if it could be right for a Pokémon to have more right to live than a human…sometimes, it didn’t seem like such an abstract idea.

He stopped himself from eating early, leaving some hunger in his stomach while pocketing the rest of the bread products in his front scrubs pocket after wiping off some of the extra buttery garlic with a napkin. The last thing he needed were grease stains in his scrubs. He finished all he needed at the dinner table, and then rose to leave. He felt he had been away from Vincent too long and wondered how he was doing. Maybe he was even worried. If not for Joey himself, then perhaps he would from being alone in a strange place.

When he just managed to stand up, the ship lurched to the side suddenly and tipped dangerously to the left, toppling Joey to his hands and knees hard before throwing him against the side of the wall. He rolled back down when the ship righted in a sharp and hard left turn. Cautiously standing again, Joey noticed that everything was toppled and made into a desolate mess. Not sticking around to find out what happened, Joey ran to the top of the ship.

Guiltily realizing that he left the girl all alone without helping her up, Joey almost turned back, and then remembered himself. You don’t even know her, he told himself. Number one is always first. Save yourself first. Next, he frantically ran across the deck, looking for the cause of disruption. If he need abandon ship, he didn’t know if he could survive. Claw couldn’t fly him away, Jet couldn’t swim him away, Kimiko and Babylon were useless.

Peering over the deck, Joey saw a dark, expansive mass beneath the waters. A moving mass. Suddenly, they weren’t quite alone in the ocean.

He then sprinted over the slippery deck to where he last saw Vincent, but could not find him. The deck was sodden because although the sky and wind did not portray adverse weather, the sea was whipping waves across the deck occasionally. Trying to delay panic, Joey attempted rational thought about what to do. However, all he could muster was Get the hell out of dodge. He also felt a sudden urging to climb to the top of the masts. It felt safer than being trapped down below. Unfortunately, that's when a brown blur darted down from the mast line and in front of Joey. Realizing it was what he had seen earlier before the battle, he paid special attention as the creature beckoned for Joey to follow underneath the deck, down a different storage passage from the one that led to the restaurant.

Joey followed curiously, trusting in the confident Pokemon, soon recognizing it as a rather smallish Raticate. It zipped down the wooden stairways with Joey quickly winding behind it and skittered across the wooden floor between storage crates towards the back, where neatly placed on racks attached to the wall was scuba gear. Above the racks were white plagues with written and visual instructions. Joey quickly scanned and memorized the details and picked out the gear he would need as the Raticate looked up at him expectantly with narrowed and knowing eyes, and could Joey be sure?...a slight smirk.

Joey turned to head back up on deck and went to the railing over looking the darkened sea. A splash of water nearly knocked him over. Whatever it was underneath the waves was undulating in rhythm. The Raticate arrived not long after, sporting an inappropriately shaped regulator. Inappropriately shaped because it was human designed strapped awkwardly onto a rodent muzzle. But hey, he was making it work for him. The Pokemon scrambled up the railing, and poised to jump over, looking back at Joey to see if he would follow. Joey sighed, took off his outer scrubs clothes to reveal his green-trimmed black wet suit underneath and stuffed his extra clothes in his bag, which he quickly threw into down the hatch to the storage room. No one would find it anytime soon. Even if someone did, he hoped they had the good sense to leave it alone. Next, he assembled the scuba gear upon himself like he remembered in the instructions, taking only a few tries and adjustments to get it right.

Turning to the Raticate, which then jumped over the side to land with a splash in the water, Joey released Claw and Jet for aerial and marine support giving vague instructions. He wasn't even sure what he himself was doing yet, but his Pokemon nodded and took it all in stride, minimal complaints. They could tell it was serious time. Babylon and Kimiko were safe in his bag. They wouldn't be much use out here. Straddling the railing, Joey prepared to take the dive, with Jet encouraging him from the water and Claw looking watchful in the calmer than it should be sky.

Leaning over the railing and then letting go, falling towards the water, Joey had a feeling this would be a long day.

PANE Pokemon

Twila set the tray of garlic cheese bread down on the floor, then set Mai back down so she could enjoy some lunch alongside Merle and Kimber. The three stood drooling over the plate of hot cheesey bread for just a moment, then dug in, apparently oblivious to how hot it still was. After she was sure that the three of them had each gotten an equal piece, Twila turned back to her own meal. She stared at it for a moment, still feeling a little unsettled from all of the social interaction she had been through. Then, feeling her stomach growl quietly, she quickly scooped up a spoonfull and tipped it into her mouth. It was delicious, and slid down her throat smoothly. She sighed contentedly as it settled in her stomach, the warmness of it relaxing her almost immediately. She continued to sip on her soup as she contemplated her current predicament. What was she to do? She wasn't at all familiar with the region, seeing as she hadn't thought to buy a map of the whole of Furoh (however she did buy a map of Port Barley while she was there). Deciding that she should first buy a map before she decided on where to go, she looked up from her half-gone soup to see that Joey was stashing the last of his meal. He then stood up and made ready to leave. Surprisingly, Twila felt a little disappointed that he was leaving. Despite the conversation being a bit stuttered and awkward, she had still enjoyed herself more than if she had been walking about the ship alone.

A lurch from the ship toppled both her and Joey onto the floor. Twila fell off of her seat, and managed to hit her forehead on the edge of the table before crashing into the wall right beside Joey. Little white spots bursted behind her closed eyelids, and she moaned quietly as the pain came on. She felt her forehead gingerly, and felt a small amount of blood trickle down between her eyes. She opened her eyes slowly to see that Joey had already gotten up. She watched as he turned and ran out of the restaurant, leaving her alone amongst the upturned tables and chairs. She stayed where she was for a while, feeling slightly upset. Weren't people supposed to check to see if you're okay after things like this? Twila shook her head, then quickly stopped when she noticed the room had started spinning. Why did she expect anything like that from Joey? They had only just met a few hours ago; why should he care about her? A nudge at her side broke off her thoughts, and she turned to find Mai, Merle and Kimber (who was behind Merle and Mai, looking quite uncomfortable) at her side looking worried. "I'm alright," Twila mumured, getting to her feet. The room spun like a carousel again, and she wondered if she didn't have a concussion. "Better get up to the Pokemon Center," she said to herself, heading out of the wrecked restaurant and up to the top deck.

The Pokemon Center was mainly for Pokemon, that was certain. However, being the only medical facility on the ship, it did have a small nurse station in the corner. Twila headed for that corner and took a seat, returning all of her Pokemon to their Pokeballs and handing two of them to a waiting Chansey. Even though they had all eaten a good snack, she could tell that Mai and Merle were still tired from the battle.

"Something wrong?" asked a gentle voice behind her. Twila started and turned to see the Nurse Joy looking at her concernedly.

"Yeah, it seems that my brain has gone on a carousel ride and forgotten to tell me," she said, more to herself than the nurse. Joy giggled, making Twila turn pink, but also smile a little. It was much easier to talk to women than it was to men.

"Well, let's see if we can't get it off that ride and back where it belongs," Joy said, then began to ask her questions. After a few minutes, and a couple of exercises, Nurse Joy sat back, clapped her hands together and said, "Well, looks like you're just a bit disoriented from bumping your head. Just take it easy for a while; if you over exert yourself you might make yourself sick." Twila grimaced at the thought, then thanked the nurse and walked to the front desk. A Chansey walked over and handed her her two Pokeballs back. She thanked the fairy Pokemon and walked out into the fresh air.

The sun was high in the sky, and there wasn't a cloud to be seen. A perfect day, except for the rolling waves that were crashing into the boat from all sides. Twila stumbled to the side of the boat, the waves making it hard to walk straight. Looking over the side, she could see a large, dark, shifting mass. Is that...alive?! she asked herself, knowing full well that it was, in fact, alive. Suddenly, Joey was at the side of the boat with scuba gear on.

"What are you-" was all she got out before he jumped over the side and into the turbulent waters. "Are you nuts?!" she yelled over the side. She let out a huff and turned to find a Raticate with a respirator hopping up onto the railing. She stared, mouth agape, as the rat Pokemon also jumped over the side and into the water. I'm not sure I want to know... she thought to herself, then watched as Joey swam about in the water. She stood there for a moment, unsure of what to do. Should she wait and see what he found, or should she go in after him? After a few moments, she turned her back to the railing and went to find an extra pair of scuba gear.

Are you nuts?! Joey asked himself with a deafening splash as he plummeted into the water. He asked himself so strongly he even wondered if it had been out loud. The shock of the cold left him temporarily immobile as he took it all in and hovered suspended in the water. A splash next to him signaled that the Raticate had entered, and it began swimming immediately, seemingly unaffected by the cold or turbulence. Joey began to feel some feeling coming back to his extremities, and could manage movement not long after that and proceeded to follow the Raticate.

The underwater world was so beautiful with colorful water Pokémon darting to and fro among the variety of artistic reefs. Unfortunately, Joey didn’t have time to fully appreciate it, because within the event of moving forward only a few feet, the heart of the problem became abundantly clear as an entire wall of what Joey recognized as Corsola came into view. Stacked upon one another among purplish domes was a barricade of the determined looking Pokémon. Turning slightly, Joey could differentiate the abrasion on the side of the hull of the ship where it had rammed into the Corsola.

Now it was obvious what the dark mass was underneath the water. This shallow part before the drop-off on the other side of the ship was a nesting ground, and right now the Corsola were making the waves with the force of coordinated bubble attacks and bubblebeams, trying to turn the ship away. And it was working. Trying to break through the attacks, Joey was getting tired. Eventually, he just let himself shift back out of range.

Jet came up to Joey’s side and rubbed his head against his trainer’s palm, being surprisingly conscientious about the horn. Glancing down, the two made eye contact and a nod. Even if he was infamous for being an ADHD ditz, the Seel Pokémon had a certain charismatic charm that made him a good communicator among other Pokémon. At the sight of him, the attacks gradually dissipated, although the Corsola remained on guard. To start off by making the Corsola calmer, Jet swam in front of them nonchalantly as if he didn’t have a care, and vocalized some sweet, moving Seel notes while doing flips, loop-de-loops and figure eights. The Corsola watched warily, and then loosened up to Jet’s easy motions. After a bit, his vocalizations took on a different tone, one filled with more meaning than just singing. He must be talking now, Joey thought. Come on buddy.

The Corsola all turned their gaze to Joey according to Jet’s motions. With a unison nod, Jet was given clearance to bring Joey closer, which he indicated by swimming behind Joey and giving him a series of pushes towards the domes. Getting the hint, the young trainer starts investigating by going up to the closest Corsola and holding up his hand as if to pet it. At Jet’s beckoning, it moved forward and rubbed itself against Joey’s fingertips, then his palms. The Pokémon felt rough and scratchy, but still had the comforting warmth of a living being. After nothing bad happened, Joey felt the shift in tension as he was accepted and they all relaxed.

Swimming over to one of the domes, Joey felt along it noticing it had the same texture of the Corsola, but it wasn’t alive. It was just a thing. He found a hole and reached his arm in, watching the reaction of the Corsola. A momentary tense-up halted Joey’s movement, but then they all pretended to be occupied elsewhere. Whatever Jet had said to them, Joey knew he was a miracle worker. At least for this day. Inside the hole, Joey felt…eggs? The domes were a nest? He couldn’t quite make it out by brushing his fingertips against it. Hoisting himself up and then angling downwards, he was able to kick himself through the hole thanks to his diminutive frame. It was ungodly dark inside, but he was now close enough to feel around with some clarity. Drawing experience from his Daycare days, he knew these were definitely eggs and very healthy ones at that. They must be trying to protect them…, Joey thought. And the ship carelessly ran them over. Considering that he had to get back on board the ship and alert the captain, Joey felt it didn’t all add up. There must be something else threatening them.

Exiting the dome, Joey heard Jet’s underwater screech compounded with the shrill cry of the Corsola. Once he was able to see underwater again, Joey almost wished he couldn’t.

PANE Pokemon

Twila found herself in a room with many differents sets of scuba gear. Being practically raised on the water, Twila was already familiar with scuba diving, and had gotten her license when she was only thirteen. She quickly changed into a swimsuit - her favorite Electrike bikini - and then suited up in a purple and black wet suit. She then attatched the scuba equipment and proceeded out to the deck. She stopped to stow her messenger bag in a storage locker on deck, then headed over to the side of the boat. Balancing on the railing, she quickly attatched flippers to her feet, then jumped over the side into the turbulent waters.

Twila quickly dived under the violent surf into the calmer depths. The sea life was beautiful; schools of Finneon and Lumineon floated by like kites in the wind while Mantine and Mantyke floated along the ocean floor. Clampearl rested on beautiful coral formations, slowly opening and closing their shells as they slept. However, in spite of all the undersea beauty, there was something off. Most of the Pokemon were quickly swimming away from the area, like they were afraid of something lurking in the shadows. Twila kept an extra close eye on the shadows between the corals. None of her Pokemon were water Pokemon, so they were basically useless in a situation like this. That was why she had kept them in her bag on deck. Twila pressed on as quickly and quietly as she could.

After a few minutes of searching, Twila found Joey amidst a giant wall of Corsola. His Seel was gesturing towards the many coral Pokemon in a friendly manner; probably trying to calm them on Joey's behalf. Once the Corsola visibly relaxed, Joey disappeared into a cavern at the base of the Corsola wall. Twila swam over towards Joey's Seel, being careful not to get too close to the wild Pokemon behind him. As she waited for Joey to return, Twila felt like she was being watched. Shadows suddenly moved all around her, swimming like tiny jets all around. Finally she recognized the little shadow jets as hungry Sharpedo, swiftly circling close by. They were apparently thinking of taking some of the Corsola as a midday snack. Or, Twila thought, they could want something less...tough. She gulped and desperately wished she had brought one of her Pokemon. Even if they couldn't breathe under water, she still could have shared her respirator with one of them. She mentally smacked herself as she watched the Sharpedo swim closer.

One Sharpedo was much, much larger than the others. It was obviously the leader of the group, and clearly was the most intimidating. It was missing an eye, and had chunks bitten out of its dorsal and pectoral fins, and it looked pretty aggressive. Twila screamed (although it only came out as giant bubbles) as the Sharpedo suddenly jetisoned toward the wall of Corsola. The Corsola growled angrily and shot out dozens and dozens of Bubblebeams. Twila ducked as the Bubblebeams soared over her head and hit the giant Sharpedo. It backed off a little, but looked in no way to be damaged. It circled back, bringing three more Sharpedo with it, and began its attack again. It was then that Twila noticed Joey coming out of the cavern. Unfortunately, the Sharpedo noticed as well, and started swimming towards Joey and Twila. Twila swam towards the cavern as fast as she could, trying to get something between her and the hungry Sharpedo before they got to her.

The Sharpedo closing in fast on Joey and Twila brought his mind to alert. Move! Move! Move! Surveying the area and quickly trying to calculate things through on his knowledge of Pokémon, Joey took a little too long in figuring things out. Luckily, the Corsola had initiated another attack. This time, the bubblebeams were closely followed by spike cannons that quickly usurped the bubbles’ path of travel by exploding through them before making impact on a small group of Sharpedos closest to the trainers. The series of amplified explosions were enough to drive the whole pack away, but they quickly circled back as the explosions dissipated, jaws gnashing and clashing, snapping and snarling, and open wide enough to fit two trainers.

Joey turned to Jet, “Use Growl, then Icy Wind!” Joey could tell that these weren’t foes that one wanted to tussle with physically, so distance attacks would work best. Jet arched his sleek Seel body and tensed, letting out a water-muffled growl that vibrated quickly to the pack of Sharpedo. They lessened a bit in their onslaught, but only a few on the outside stopped completely before picking up the pace again. Next to Jet, Joey saw the Raticate sidle up and start spinning vertically in the water. Is it trying to make a whirlpool? Joey thought. No, obviously not. It’s not big nor fast enough. It stopped spinning, but it looked a bit different afterwards in demeanor. It was more fierce, more alert, and more murderous. Now, it started glowing red in outline like a dull neon sign and then quickly sped towards the leader of the pod, a large, brutish looking Sharpedo with many battle scars. The Raticate closed its left paw in a fist that started glowing with a dark energy, then smashed it against the cheek of the impeding Sharpedo causing it to veer off course.

The Raticate rubbed its clearly bruised paw before going in for another attack. The Sharpedo was shaking itself back and forth, trying to recover from the hit. Raticate’s paw glowed dark and it started speeding forward, but the glow dissipated and the Pokemon stopped in its track. It wouldn’t work against the Sharpedo in this condition for some reason. Slightly puzzled, the Raticate followed up with a Quick Attack, slamming the leader again, but it was quickly taken up in a Crunch attack by a fellow pod member. The Raticate squealed in pain, bubbles escaping from its respirator while the Sharpedo shook it violently, causing its respirator and oxygen tank to fall off and float to the ocean floor. Joey sped after it, realizing that they were on an underwater cliff of sorts, and the drop-off wasn’t that far away. Not wanting to leave the Raticate in that position, he ordered Jet, “Now, Jet, use Headbutt! Aim for the gills!”

The Seel powered himself through the water and caught the Sharpedo just right behind the gills. It immediately dropped the Raticate, which began to sink and was losing oxygen all the time, and turned on Jet. Not sure of what to do next, he waited for Joey’s next command. Looking over his shoulder as he went for the oxygen tank, Joey dictated, “Jet, use Icy Wind!” A force sped through the water at the Sharpedo that thickened the water into shards of ice and slammed them into the group. Meanwhile, Joey was swimming so far deep that his ears were starting to hurt, but he was so close to the tank. He reached out, grasped with his fingertips the sleek and smooth cylindrical body of the tank, and nearly got his arm taken off from a Sharpedo that zipped in front of him and gathered up the tank in its jaws, crushing it, and expelling all the oxygen it had.

No… Joey quickly turned and sped off back to the Raticate. He knew he was wasting time otherwise. Upon reaching the Pokemon, he could tell it was losing consciousness. Holding it like a child or stuffed animal in the crook of his arm, he gathered a breath and held it in his lungs, then removed his respirator and quickly pressed it to the Raticate’s muzzle, bending it slightly to conform to the shape. After some sputtering, Joey could feel the Raticate breathing again. Looking around for Twila, and spotting her, he jerked his head upward. They needed to surface.

And they needed to do it now.

PANE Pokemon

Twila watched as Joey and Jet and the Raticate took on the pack of Sharpedos. She was amazed at how Jet could hold his own against the Sharpedo. Her Pokemon wouldn't have stood a chance if Joey had used him in their battle. This thought made her determined to train her Pokemon even more. She wanted to make sure that her Pokemon could hold their own against any opponent they encountered.

It was about this time that Joey came back and motioned that they should surface. Quickly. Twila nodded and kicked upwards towards the surface.

The water had become even more turbulent at the surface. It took all of Twila's concentration to keep swimming toward the boat. When she reached it, a few of the ship's employees assisted her onto the deck, then went back to the edge to help Joey. Twila quickly shed her scuba tank and wet suit. Wringing her wet hair out, she hurried over to the lockers to take her Pokeballs out of her bag. Grabbing her Pokemon, she turned to find many of the male passengers staring at her. She blushed, not understanding why they were all so interested in her. She didn't once think it was because of her Electrike bikini.

She hurried back to Joey, trying to ignore all the people staring at her and the blush that was heating her face.

"We should go tell the captain what's going on down there," Twila said to Joey, "We're only going to stress the Corsola out more if we stay here!"

BLARG

Hiding in the safety of the shade, Vincent sat reading Jules Verne’s masterpiece 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. He vicariously experienced the thrills of discovering new species and secret caves and imagined fighting off giant cephalopods. He tried to ignore the pessimistic doppelganger sitting on his shoulder whispering into his ear, “You’ll never know how that feels. You’re too scared to do anything by yourself.” It was true. Vincent let other people make decisions for him and would just deal with it. He was pleased with the result sometimes but there was always that nagging in the back of his head. Or on his shoulder. “Even Joey can do things on his own.”

Vincent watched in horror as Joey made the acquaintance of a girl not much older than himself. The stammering, the lack of control over her Pokemon, black hair rivaling the tone of Vincent’s. Vincent could not help but compare himself to her. Disgusted, Vincent slammed his book shut, gathered his belongings and headed downstairs to get a bite at the restaurant, leaving Wally, Typhoon and Amazon on the deck.

The doppelganger on his shoulder followed him though, and so did the girl. Only a few minutes had passed and Joey and the girl entered, choosing to sit at a table across the room. Vincent felt a surge of dark energy pulse through him. It was a sensation he hadn't felt very often but when it came, it dominated him. It was envy. Having Joey's insecurities to cushion his own, Vincent felt safe around Joey. As Joey climbed up the psychological ladder, Vincent could see he was going to be left behind, or at least the that's what he saw reflected through the splinter of the Devil's Mirror in his eye.

Vincent left the money for the salad and soda he had ordered and exited the restaurant stealthily. If Joey didn't want Vincent anymore, then Vincent would ensure that he didn't see him anymore. Back in his cabin, Vincent was sifting through the tons of luggage he had packed to find anything that could be deemed necessary, besides the plethora of books. In retrospect, he realized it was stupid to bring so many books. He had one of the nifty electronic book readers that he could use but he preferred the comfort of a physical book. He loved the smell of the paper, the feeling of turning the page and being able to hide behind the large leather-bound tomes. Vincent heaved a sigh and left his books.

Vincent looked out to the sea, leaning against the railing. He didn't remember walking up to the deck but ignored his lapse of memory. His shoulders sagged uncharacteristically. "That doppelganger must've had a bite to eat too," he joked, trying to rationalize. The hunger of a metaphorical miniature person his shoulder was not to blame though. Vincent had not been feeling well since embarking from Barley. In this single lucid moment, he realized something must be wrong. "This isn't me. I don't act like this." Vincent wasn't looking out to sea for fun. He had an impulse to jump.

"Where are my Pokemon?" he asked himself. He felt ashamed that he didn't know. As he turned to find them, the ship rocked violently to the port side. Vincent was knocked overboard. Panicking in the water, he found that his clothing was dragging him. As he struggled to take his shirt off, he felt an abupt bump from underneath him. It was something rough. It felt like it had sandpaper for skin. Vincent dove under the water to find the source of the bump. He was horrified with the result. He was swimming amid Sharpedo. Lots of them.

"Squirt, Squirtle!"

Typhoon splashed into the water right next to Vincent and began pulling his trainer. The Squirtle couldn't swim very fast with the weight of a human dragging behind him but he made his strongest attempt. Vincent inconveniently lost consciousness at that moment, making Typhoon's job about ten times more difficult.

"We should go tell the captain what's going on down there," Twila said to Joey, "We're only going to stress the Corsola out more if we stay here!" Joey had just been hauled up onto the side of the ship by the crewman and he was out of breath. After recalling Jet from the water into his Pokéball, he laid the Raticate on the deck and checked it. It was still breathing, but shallowly. Looking up, he agitatedly called, “Can we get a nurse here?” A Sailor nodded to him and ran off. That’s when he heard it.

A splash. A roar. A smaller splash. Looking over the side of the ship, Joey just about lost his lunch. Vincent was in the water, Typhoon was dragging him, and the Sharpedo just noticed them. Acting quickly, Joey thought of all his Pokémons’ capabilities, and luckily he saw a certain Pokémon wheel into view in the sky.

“Claw! Get the Sharpedo!” The Pidgey flew in close and performed a Gust attack, changing the current of the water and deterring several Sharpedo momentarily, then Claw dived in as close as he could and scraped a few of them that were too close to the surface, but his feet came away raw and scratched. Joey thought about using Kimiko to Sing them to sleep, but with the possibility of it working through water and with the possible danger she would be in, Joey didn’t want to risk it. Then he thought, but Vincent is really in more trouble. He rushed to grab his Pokéball and released her, and ordered Claw to carry her above the water. Inflating herself to lessen the load on Claw, they made their way above the water to Sing. Meanwhile, Joey dived over the side of the boat again after telling Twila to stay on deck.

Splashing into the water again, Joey couldn’t believe he was doing this. He needed Jet’s help, but he had been reluctant to take him. After all, he had had enough of battling for today, but Joey knew he couldn’t do this alone. In a flash of red energy, the white sleek body was speeding beside him, and seeing Vincent and Typhoon struggling ahead, he knew why he was there. Rushing forward, he started Headbutting the closest Sharpedo away while Joey reached Vincent.

Holding him with one arm around his torso and under his own arms, Joey struggled to keep Vincent’s head above water. He was fully unconscious now and dead weight. Realizing his choice of words, Joey inwardly shuddered. Kimiko’s song was taking effect as a few Sharpedo closest to Vincent and Joey dropped away, still swimming, but not directed at anything. They weren’t going to make it to the ladder in time, and a line of Sharpedo was blocking them. Then they rushed in. Then, something came down from above and smacked in the water in front of the two boys. It was a red and white lifesaver ring. Perfect! Treading water furiously and trying his best to ease it around Vincent, Joey quickly secured him in the ring. It was just snug enough to not let him slip through, and the crewman started lifting him up.

They had beaten the odds! Vincent was safe! Joey’s heart lifted. Then, with a sharp pain shooting up his leg, he was tugged into the depths of the water.

Looking down as water rushed past him, Joey saw that a Sharpedo was latched firmly around his leg, and the streaming water around him was quickly turning thick and dark…Joey then realized it was his blood. Panicking, he reached down with his fingers and tried to pry the Sharpedo off, to no avail, and bloody, scratched fingers. The pain was indescribable. He thought it was going to tug his leg off. He felt like he was breaking. He could only hope that he wasn’t.

When Joey couldn’t think of anything else except that he hoped his Pokémon got away in time, he noticed that the Sharpedo was dragging him down in a diagonal back towards the Corsola…back towards…the leader of the pod. The big, brutish, and scarred Sharpedo, who slowly turned at his arrival with the glint of murder in his eye. However, he never got to carry out any aggression since a dark shadow rolled over everything as something massive crashed through the Corsola wall, dispelling several of them onto Joey and various Sharpedo, and causing the one attached to his leg to let go.

Trying to swim away and upward, Joey was struggling as Corsola became intertwined as one bulky mass that made it a struggle to kick or swim. Then the Wailord was directly above him, crushing him against the sandy bottom, and then dragged him over the drop-off point. The sheer mass pushed him backward and down, down, and farther down into the depths where it got dark and cold. The Corsola continued putting more distance than he could handle between himself and the surface. And he realized that not grabbing any of the scuba gear may have been a mistake.

He was starting to feel light-headed, and everything was moving so slowly. Too much lactic acid had developed in his muscles and he couldn’t move anymore. His thinking slowed, and he was beginning to ache. Pressure was coming at him from all over. Suddenly, Jet was there, pushing Joey from below, careful with his horn. It was slow progress, and Joey’s ears hurt so badly. He felt like he wanted to scream, and 17 seconds later, he did, releasing all his pain, and all his oxygen.

Jet looked about as hopeless and pitiful as he felt, wondering if he should follow his trainer down to his death, and how he would look back on this day. Before he could finish going over the mental montage, another shadow rose from beneath Joey and quickly expelled him to the surface, causing a painful popping in his ears.

Breaking the surface, Joey gulped in air and accidently some water causing him to sputter before taking in more breaths. Jet surfaced next to him and swam next to the Pokémon surfing Joey over to the ladder. After finally catching his breath, he realized he was on a Wailmer. When they reached the ladder with minimal Sharpedo problems (a Wailmer was a bit out of their league), Joey recalled Jet, Claw, and Kimiko. Then, leaning down on the spherical Pokémon, he patted it and pressed his cheek against the cool, rubbery surface and thanked it before hopping up the ladder with his good leg.

His right leg was still bleeding profusely and his hands were still raw and scratched, but after a good trial of physical adrenaline, he collapsed on the deck. People gathered around him, talking furiously, but he realized that something was wrong. Their voices were muffled, sounding as if he were still underwater. His hearing ability thickened while he watched their lips move. They never ceased, but the sound kept fading away.

Then it was gone, and he passed out, small muscle spasms rocking his unconscious body.

Twila watched as Joey laid the small Raticate down on the deck of the boat. She could tell the creature was still breathing, but the shallowness of it alarmed her. "Can we get a nurse here?" Joey yelled to the crowd, and a sailor went to get her. Suddenly, a viscious wave attacked the side of the boat, sending most of the passengers face first onto the deck. A splashing noise was heard a moment after the last person hit the deck.

Twila stood and wobbled over to the edge of the deck. A squirtle was trying to pull his unconscious trainer back to the boat amidst the dozens of Sharpedo, which had unfortunately just noticed them. A call for her to stay on deck made Twila whip her head back around just in time to see Joey jump back overboard. "Joey!" she yelled over the railing, but it was lost on the wind and violent sea. She watched nervously as Joey and Jet swam over to the man and carried him back over to the ship. Twila looked around, but all of the sailors seemed to be preoccupied with keeping the boat right side up or helping other passengers. It seemed she was the only one that had seen Joey jump back over.

She quickly found a life ring next to the railing and took it out of it's protective box. A few sailors noticed what was going on as Twila threw the ring over the side. They ran over to help pull the two men out of the sea, but when the ring came back up there was only one. Twila saw that this wasn't Joey and quickly turned back to the ocean. Joey was still treading water, but then abruptly disappeared. It took a few seconds for what had happened to sink in, but when it did it made Twila scream. The sailors that had brought the man up restrained her as she tried to jump back into the Sharpedo infested water. She struggled against the sailors' strong arms as the bubbles that were Joey's breath began to slow. The water churned wildly, and then turned into a black void. Twila's face went pale as she realized it was blood. She stopped struggling against the two men and just stared blankly at the spot where the void was dissolving and thinning to just a shade darker than the ocean around it.

Twila couldn't move, not even when the two sailors released her and went to take the other man and his Squirtle to the infirmary. She just kneeled on the deck and stared at the place where she last saw her new friend vanish under the waves. She couldn't feel anything; her whole body had gone numb. She didn't even notice the Wailmer when it first surfaced. When she did though, she saw that Joey was riding on top of it. If he was alive though, Twila didn't know. It was only when he got up to climb the ladder that she was certain that he was alive. "Joey!" she yelled again (happily this time).

"Look! Someone else's climbing up the ladder!" "When did he get dumped overboard?" "Did he go try to help that guy that was pulled up earlier?" "You mean someone else fell overboard too?" "Oh Arceus, look at his leg!" People were gathering around Joey, blocking Twila's view of him. When the talk turned to his leg, she stood up quickly, disregarding the protest from her numb legs, and pushed quickly through the crowd. The sight of the bite wound in Joey's leg was horrifying. Twila instinctively looked away from the leg and at Joey's face.

"Someone get a doctor!" was yelled in the background, however all of Twila's attention was on Joey. She walked quickly over and kneeled next to him, making sure to not look at his leg. She looked at his face again and realized something more was wrong. His eyes were unfocused and glazed over, and he didn't seem to understand what was going on around him. Before she could say anything, Joey lost consciousness. She quickly caught his head in her hands to keep it from knocking on the deck. She watched wide-eyed as his body started to convulse; she didn't know what to do. She looked around wildly, tears starting to come to her eyes. Wasn't a doctor supposed to be here? Didn't someone call for one? What were all the other people doing? They were just standing there, like they were staring at two animals in a zoo. She tried to yell at them to get the doctor, but nothing came out. A ceasing of movement from Joey made her gasp and look back down at him. A tear ran freely down her cheek as she leaned forward to check his breathing. The soft breath that hit the side of her face told her he was still breathing. She let go of the breath that she had unwittingly been holding back, and suddenly the doctor was there.

Twila was led gently away while the doctor tended to Joey. She really didn't want to leave Joey there, but she was too weak from shock to protest. In moments she was in the infirmary next to the man that Joey had saved earlier. She figured it would only be a matter of time until Joey was in here as well, so she might as well stay. She sat down on a cot to wait, hoping it wouldn't be too long. She didn't notice her eyelids drooping, or that she fell asleep soon after. Being in shock was very exhausting, after all.

Sweet Team

A slow sloshing noise accompanied the rocking motion of the ship and permeated the sturdy wooden walls all the way to the cabin where Joey slept, and fidgeted with dreams of being crushed…He awoke feverishly to the touch of a nurse who was checking his temperature and tried to sit up, only to be beckoned back down by the same nurse. He didn’t put up much of a struggle.

His head was swimming and was tense, a pulsing pain behind his eyes. He was aware of more life forms in the room, and he reluctantly opened his eyes to see both Twila and Vincent lying on adjacent cots. Waking up a bit more, Joey realized an intense pain in his leg and cried out, or at least, he thought he did. Yes, he must have because suddenly the nurse was hovering over him with a worried expression on her face, checking machines, bandages, and linens.

The young bedridden boy recognized her as a Nurse Joy, but she looked a little bit different than usual. Was it her hair? Whatever it was, Joey liked it. Also, her little assistant came into view. Wasn’t it supposed to be a Chansey? It didn’t look like the one in the picture books Joey used to read. Maybe it was young, he concluded.

Sinking back into the bed to relax, Joey tried not to remember the events and what had happened to his leg. Instead, he remembered his Pokémon. Moving to get up, he had to go get his backpack that he had stowed somewhere. Halfway out of bed he realized his mistake and quickly covered up. Now he could add “clothes” to the To-Find list. Why hadn’t the nurse stopped him from rising? Oh, she was bent over picking up a clipboard. That was odd. Had she just dropped it? Wouldn’t it have made a sound when it fell?

Brushing aside his irrelevant questions, he got the nurse’s attention and asked for his Pokémon. Except, no sound came out. Oh great! Just what he needed! His voice wasn’t working now. However, he found it slightly odd in the back of his mind that his voice wasn't raspy or sore. It felt fine. He cleared his throat and tried again. Still no sound, but it had felt like he had talked, and possibly slurred. What was going on?

Joey’s usual serene expression hid his puzzlement, but the Nurse Joy had a fallen look on her face. She leaned down next to his bed and handed him his pack, intact with all his supplies. Searching through it, he found his Pokéballs, and one by one released his Pokémon onto his lap. Four smiling and healthy faces greeted him and tried to edge closer. They were okay. Joey visibly relaxed. All his problems melted away, because the important thing was that his Pokémon were okay in his absence.

Claw managed to get the closest and nuzzled Joey’s bare chest where the blanket had fallen down. The feeling of his beak was lightly scratchy, but his feathers were firm and comforting, the tips extremely soft. Hugging his Pokémon close, he noticed that Nurse Joy was beckoning that it was time for the Pokémon to return to their balls, and Joey to get some rest.

He recalled Jet, Kimiko, and Babylon, but he couldn’t part with Claw yet. He felt like he needed the comfort, but instead of show a vulnerability, he acted arrogantly and defiant about keeping his Pidgey out, and he gave the Joy a hardened stare that persuaded her to leave it alone. His tactic succeeded, and she left the room, her nurse duties accomplished.

Joey looked over at Twila and Vincent. All he wanted now was to make it at dock safely. Since their way to Fidona was blocked, he wondered where they would dock at. Pulling the map out of his pack, the one he had gotten at the bookstore where he had met Vincent, he was aware that the most logical port was Petropolis. A bit off course, but nothing he couldn’t handle.

He sat back and relaxed. His head felt weird, clogged up in a way he was unfamiliar with, as water had pooled behind his ear drums and made them sore. The nurse had drained them during his sleep, but there was no way for him to know. Instead, while he couldn’t sleep due to thoughts zipping incoherently through his mind, he just lay back against the headboard and petted Claw, running his fingers through his feathers and especially behind his head feathers to help release the oils there.

Soon, he had a visitor on the chair next to him. The Raticate! How could he forget! The smaller than average Pokémon seemed delightfully cheery and healthy and even accepted a cautious pat on the head from its savior before darting off to cause more mischief, no doubt. Up close, Joey noticed its small size. Raticate were bigger than that back in his hometown of Pyrite.

Claw cooed gently against Joey’s chest and the rumbling sent a calm over Joey. He didn’t even realize he couldn’t hear it.
