PANE: Darryn Kellor

“PAN!” Darryn screamed as the Aerodactyl began to fling itself upside down in an attempt to dislodge his passenger. Miracles were abundant as his researcher friend managed to keep her grip on the outraged flying dino-Poke and remained airborne rather than a smear on the sidewalk below.

The crazy flying car that Professor Stone had showed up in was with them once more, an intent old man and bewildered young woman in the stylised leather seats. Darryn’s cousin was hugging close to the Professor, her Smoochum and Pan’s Cleffa in a deathgrip under her armpit with the other arm locked around the Prof’s. She certainly hadn’t gotten used to flying yet but at least she wasn’t crying!

“Bravo – distract that Aerodactyl with a Featherdance attack!” Darryn ordered. His Pidgeot banked hard and swept around the rock beast to flank it from the other side from Douken and his Skarmory. With mighty wingbeats, golden feathers were spouted from Bravo’s wings in a curtain of fluttering projectiles that filled the air with shimmering gold. Like a golden wave, the feathers poured all around the Aerodactyl, blocking its vision of both Bravo and Sabre as the Skarmory unleashed its volley of Swift stars.

*And now it’s my turn!*

Darryn gripped hard to Bravo’s neck and left his body. In the void he did not need Bravo to fly as he had no real body to speak of. The only thing in the darkness for him to lean towards was the ball of emotion that was the Aerodactyl. So much confusion, anger, a pang of relief, the sick joy of a challenge were there but more than anything, Darryn was amazed by the sheer size of it.

*Is this the strength of emotion that a newly revived fossil Pokemon has?*

He summoned powerful emotions of love and tranquillity into his palms and plunged into the seething light.

“ARGH!” Darryn yelled as he was thrown back out of the void just as quickly as he had entered it. A voice screamed in his ears in words that he did not understand at a volume that he did not care to listen to. Bravo buckled slightly under the sudden shout from his trainer but didn’t slow his attack. Instead, he squawked loudly back to his rider.

“I-it’s ok, Bravo.” Darryn lied as he positioned himself more comfortably on his back. “Nothing to worry about.”

But he was worried. He’d never been thrown away from another being’s Emotaglow like that before – even when they had been struggling to get away from him. The emotion inside that Aerodactyl was too fierce and too overwhelming for him to even touch and there was nothing he could do to help immobilise it. He felt so… useless. It had worked before… So why not now? Could he ever overcome feelings as strong as those that the fossil Pokemon was holding on to?

“Keep it up, Bravo!” Darryn resigned himself to consider his own abilities later. For now, getting Pan back safe was the only thing he should be focusing on. “Keep using Featherdance!”

And a Golurk

Professor Stone slowed the flying car down as he reached Pan and the aerodactyl. He was grateful of the choice of attacks by Douken and Darryn. Swift homed in on its chosen target, avoiding any stray stars from hitting allies. Featherdance did no damage at all, but it did lower the fossil pokemon’s capacity to deliver devastating blows. With Pan weighing her down, the aerodactyl could not flip right side up to strike back. During all of this, Stone carefully aligned the vehicle to catch Pan in the back seat.

“I need someone to guide Pan into the back,” Stone asked. The golett Droid quickly volunteered, as expected. The professor didn’t think Lyla would let go of his arm until they were safely on the ground (he wished she would though. He was starting to loose feeling). The automation pokemon was standing on top of the back half of the vehicle, giving hand signals to move left and right to make sure Pan had a clean landing.

“Almost there…” Stone was watching Droid for cues while trying not to look up too much (Pan was in a skirt after all).

That was when the aerodactyl finally gave out. Her wings stopped flapping, weakened by the combination of being choked and attacked at the same time. Pan fell into the backseat, but her head had a hard landing upon the car door. The loud thump was followed by a moan as the researcher slumped off the car seat and onto the floor of the vehicle. She was quite dazed from the hard landing, so she didn’t have much of an initial reaction to what came next.

Not only did Pan fall, the fossil pokemon fell into the vehicle as well. Upon impact, Droid stumbled off his spot, falling right out of the vehicle. The large size of the pokemon put a lot of weight on the vehicle very quickly. The jets beneath were working overtime to keep everyone in the air. Worse, the aerodactyl was trying to get back up, flailing about in the vehicle. Her feet kicked the front seats with reckless abandon, rocking the passengers back and forth. In addition, her tail swung around, beating the professor further. The car horn continued to beep as Stone was knocked directly into it multiple times. Chi-Chi was running around wildly the vehicle, screaming while avoiding being crushed by the dinosaur. Overall, the entire scene was chaotic.

It was about to get worse.

After one swipe of the tail across the vehicle’s control panel, there came the last thing anyone wanted to hear: silence. The jets were turned off; nothing was stopping the group from plummeting into the concrete jungle below. The cries and screams of pokemon and humans only intensified as the vehicle fell out of the sky. There was a brief sensation of weightlessness, like one would feel on a roller coaster. Perhaps this feeling would be pretty cool if the passengers were to be saved by a bungee cord or something. Stone frantically reached for the on switch, but his attempts were pushed back by the tail of a panicked aerodactyl.

Surely Darryn and Douken were diving down right after them, but would the strength of their bird pokemon be enough to stop their rapid descent? Pan hoped they didn’t try: they would likely meet the same fate. Pinned down under the aerodactyl, there wasn’t much she could do but wait for the end.

*SLAM*

The passengers inside jerked up hard as the vehicle met an obstacle. Lucky for them, they were still far from the ground, so they didn’t quite reach a lethal speed. Airbags deployed almost instantaneously to prevent Stone and Lyla from completely bashing their heads into the windshield. Still, just because they weren’t dead didn’t mean anyone wasn’t injured. The professor had a nasty case of whiplash, while Pan was still dazed from hitting her head. She felt the back of her head to check her condition.

“Pandora, are you alright?”

Pan winced as she felt her head. Still, she told the professor “I’m alright,” even at the sight of red upon her hand. “Wait, are we still moving?”

“You have made good choices for your pokemon team, Ms. Gibbs,” the professor confirmed. Indeed, they were safely descending to the ground, courtesy of Droid’s timely evolution. The golurk used its massive arms to support the vehicle, floating towards the ground. Soon, they would be back on terra firma, safe and sound.

However, there was still the elephant in the room, or rather, the aerodactyl in the hovercraft. The fossil pokemon was also quite dazed, no longer flailing about. With this opportunity, Stone started to quickly look around the vehicle.

“Where did I put those pokeballs?”

While he was looking for something to capture the aerodactyl, one of those pokeballs rolled out from under the seat and into Pan’s bloodied hand. She noticed the yellow and black coloring on top: it was an ultra ball, one of the strongest pokeballs available to the public. The researcher looked up to see that the aerodactyl also saw the pokeball in her hand. At first, Pan was tense, thinking that the pokemon would panic once again. But the aerodactyl made no such move. In the fossil’s eyes, they had fought in a test of strength. Pan came out the victor. Not even in the deepest reaches of her genetic memory had the aerodactyl met a human that was crazy enough to challenge her, much less have the strength to bring a massive beast down. Pan thought she saw a nod coming from the aerodactyl’s head, as if accepting the capture. Pan gave a solid nod back and pressed the button upon the pokeball. Without so much as a struggle, the pokeball immediately disappeared from Pan’s hands, transferred to the museum’s computer system.

With the dinosaur out of the way, Pan could see the giant face of her golurk staring back at her. It waved its massive hand, a greeting it learned from watching people. Her pachirisu jumped on top of her from the back seat, chirping gleefully at their victory.

“Ooh, still a little sore there Chi-Chi…”

Pan took a look at herself for any more injuries. Fortunately, the only other thing that suffered was her attire. Her curls were tangled, a shoulder strap was ripped, there was a vertical tear on her skirt that went a bit too far up her thigh, and she was missing a shoe. Needless to say, unless she was posing for a pinup poster for Justin, she wouldn’t be wearing this dress again.

Pan straightened what was needed for decency and awaited the rescue party.

"How about you Lyla? You're still in one piece?" she asked the other human passenger in the vehicle.

Only with Pan would an aftermath of a battle create more chaos. with both of them landing on the hovercraft, the weight of the vehicle and the flailing of a dinosaur only seemed to cause more chaos, going as far as to shut down the engine. He didn't hanve much time to stop the weight, nor find a way to lesten the impact. Driod, however, seemed to have by evolving into the Golurk he saw at the temple. Being able to catch the car made it seem like he had jump jets or something.

With Sabre dropping down to Darryn and Bravo, he yelled out to them, "Let's escort them to the hospital. Considering all that chaos, I am sure we all could need another check up." At that point, Douken let off a terrible cough from the pressure of the speed he had been going at. Not only that, but the air wasn't as thick on ground floor than it is at the top of a skyscraper. Signalling to Driod to follow, they took a trip to the hospital.

Seemed like they were expecting their arrival, for as soon as they arrived, the nurses and doctors rushed to checked each and every person for their health. On the television, they were already talknig about it, getting a helicopter view of the "LIVE" footage of the upside down dinosuar landing on the car, however, there was so much commotion that he couldn't hear what was being said.

With a blanket being wrapped around Douken, he was given a resperator to help him catch his breath and rhythm back. AS they did that, they took his Pokemon to be checked as well. In a short notice, he got them back with a little bit of bad news. Seemed like Rufus took a bit too much damage at the ball and sprained his leg. He had the option of taking the pup with him as he recovered or send him back to a care taker. "PLease don't tell my friends about this," he told them, "but I got a care taker."

With a quick call to his parents, he told them of the situation, letting them take care of Rufus. In the meantime, however, he decided to retrieve Balisk from their hold in excahnge. "Take care of him," he said beofre ending the call. After that, it was time to sleep.

Once he was better, he had a Gym Battle to take care of.

PANE: Darryn Kellor

Things going from bad to worse didn’t seem possible to Darryn as he turned Bravo into a stooping dive towards the plummeting car complete with angry fossil Pokemon passenger and assorted screaming cargo. Whaat they would be able to do, he had no idea – stopping such a heavy target with just the strength of Bravo’s feathered wings was more than impossible and even Lady at max power wouldn’t be able to lift the falling car with her psychic abilities. But then again, Pan and the others didn’t need Darryn’s help.

With the timely evolution of Droid, Pan’s Golett, a behemoth of a guardian Pokemon lifted the car out of the air like a muscle man bench-pressing a rolling pin. It took some rapid manoeuvring on Bravo’s part to dodge the suddenly-not-falling obstacle but the Pidgeot and rider were already becoming accustomed to their own movements in the air so it wasn’t a difficult move.

They peeled around in the air, banking hard to come back on themselves only to find the massive form of the Aerodactyl being sucked into a Pokeball in Pan’s hands.

*Damn! I should have thought about catching it!* Darryn inwardly thought as they swept closer to the vehicle that Droid was setting safely on the ground.

*****

“Unnngh…” Lyla rubbed a tender spot on top of her head as they touched down, unable to reach anything else from her awkward position in the footwell of the passenger seat. When the Aerodactyl had crashed down she had made a grab for Pan to try and get the girl out of harm’s way but had only ended up with a clout from the rock-type’s wing.

"How about you Lyla? You're still in one piece?" Pan’s voice was nearby. Lyla blinked around for her.

“Just about…” Lyla moaned as she tried to pick herself up, accepting help from her new friend gratefully. “But that was, like, totally crazy and I’m not doing it again!”

Sitting in the passenger seat and looking around for Ume, Lyla found herself (and most of the front of the car) covering in short and stubby but shiny and sparkling gold feathers. She picked a few out of her hair and off her dress before the source of the soft cushion showed herself at the Breeder’s ankles.

“I think Lima, like, used Copycat to use a Featherdance?” Lyla murmured, plucking her Smoochum, Ume off of the floor to sit in her lap. “She must be smart!”

Lima blinked at her blankly then looked down at a fist of feathers in her hands before giggling and twirling on the spot, fanning herself with the beautiful pinions.

“Or maybe she just likes pretty things?!” Lyla laughed.

“Lyla! Pan!” Darryn half-stumbled off his new Pidgeot with wobbly legs that were not accustomed to being on something so solid. “Is everyone OK?”

Lyla had to admit, she wasn’t normally one for adventure and peril but the feeling she was getting after the fear and panic was rather addictive. She felt giddy and happy and relieved and exhausted and energetic all at once! It was a Butterfree-in-the-stomach sensation that she simply did not want to let go of. She reassured her cousin that she wasn’t hurt and that she was happy she had come along with them all because the guilt of leaving their friend to her fate wasn’t an option for her ever.
Darryn seemed shocked by that again but appeared to accept it. Lyla wondered if she should also be surprised at herself but didn’t have much opportunity to sink back and think about it right then – a newscrew was already on the scene.

A trip to the hospital seemed like a great idea to Lyla as Douken suggested it and she was even more thankful that Droid had evolved – his massive form could still pick up the car and fly it across town without them having to wait for a taxi.

*****

Darryn let the last of the camera crew snap a few more shots of him and Bravo at the hospital doors as the others were being treated inside and made sure to get a few discrete quotes out. Prof. Stone was the real star at the moment since he could actually explain to the city news team what had happened but the chance for a little publicity wouldn’t hurt the Co-ordinator's career one bit!

“Fa…” A tiny pink hand tugged at Darryn’s trouser leg. He scooped her up and tickled her tummy with a finger.

“Where did you come from?!” He smiled, going back into the hospital in search of his friends.

And a Golurk

((Bunnying approved))

Professor Stone stood before the crowd of reporters to allow the others undisturbed treatment. He was brandishing a neck brace, helping to direct the attention of the media towards him.

“Earlier this evening, a bunch of hooded hooligans crashed the Petropolis Museum’s fundraising event. In the chaos, the on-stage revival of our aerodactyl went awry. The rest I’m sure you saw on TV. Now, the aerodactyl is within the museum’s storage system, and all of the young trainers involved had suffered only minor injuries. I can’t say anymore because of the pending police investigation. Now, if you excuse me, it’s been a very long night. I’m going home.”

The flurry of questions, microphones, and cameras followed him outside. He took one look at his damaged hovercraft and promptly flagged down a taxi.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Ow ow ow…”

“Hold on, almost done here.”

Pan was sitting upon a hospital bed as the doctor was stitching up the back of her head. Hair clippings were lying upon the floor, a result of cleaning the wound. Her dress was held together with some handy scotch tape from the nurse’s office, so it would last the rest of the night. Other than that, Pan felt perfectly fine.

“All done!” the doctor replied, putting aside his surgical instruments. “Now, be careful around the area, make sure to keep it clean. I’d also suggest wearing a hat to keep it covered.”

“So, I’m free to go?” she asked as she was gathering her things.

“I don’t see why not. There were no signs of a concussion, but try and have someone take you home tonight. One more thing: try and stay away from flying on rampant dinosaurs, for both your sakes.”

“Both?”

The doctor quickly looked over the medical chart and then looked back at Pan. He did this several times before he figured out what had happened.

“Y-you didn’t get the call? About your blood test?” The doctor expressed a mix of nervousness and urgency.

“Is it bad? I mean, my body’s been pretty screwy lately, but I thought I was just getting used to the city air. That or that tuna-fruit sandwich I tried. That one kept me nauseous for days.”

At that point, the doctor simply blurted it out. Just like that, time stopped for Pandora Gibbs. The room fell into silence; only the people on the other side of the door could be heard. The silence continued as Pan’s mind worked to figure out how to cope with this news. Was this good? Bad? What about her job? Her friends? Justin? She didn’t speak to the doctor as she walked out of the room, making a beeline for the bathroom.

“I’m supposed to be this great researcher. I can write papers about places and pokemon all over the continent, but I’m clueless about what’s going on inside me…”

For several minutes, Pan was splashing her face with water, trying to calm herself down. She was leaning against the bathroom sink and looking into the mirror, as if formulating a plan with herself. She only looked away when someone else walked into the bathroom.

“Lyla?”

“Hey Pan, I was, like, looking for you all over the place! I wanted to give you your pokemon back- like, are you OK?”

“Lyla, can you keep a secret?”

“Huh?”

“I’m going to tell everyone soon, I promise. It’s just…I gotta tell Justin first. Well, second, after you.” Pan was looking just as scared as she did under the giant meteor back at Starfall Field. Lyla wasn’t the first person she wanted to tell, but the researcher had to tell someone.

“Pan, you’re like, scaring me. Just let it out already.”

“I’m pregnant.”

Another restless night as Douken woke up. The anticipation was killing him, but that didn't mean that Vega was up 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Looking at the clock, it read 3:27. Most likely, Pan, Darryn, and Lyla would be asleep, so talking things over should be easier.

"Everyone, come out." Releasing all six Pokemon on hand, they all let off some tired yawns before looking at the new member of the team. "This is Balisk. She joined us at Starfall Field, and will be taking Rufus' place on the team until his leg recovers. That said, don't be surprised if I have to move some of you back home for others. Being a trainer, I can't carry everyone with me.

"Now for why I called you all out now. Come morning, we are going to seek out the gym leader, Vega. We trained hard for this, so don't forget. He uses Psychic and Dark types, but after doing some research on some recent matches, he has developed a third sub-type. Now, I am sure this can be of one or two types, but either way, we are ready for it. So are we all set?" Everyone cried so much that it was really hard to tell who was who, before being told to hush and remind them when and where they were. With a smile, he returned everyone back except for Koldo.

"Now, like I promised you, you are in the next gym match, even through you are going in at a disadvantage." The frog seemed to shrug off that detail, punching through the air. "I know you have been training hard, and I know you got some coverage as well. Still, we need to do a small plan change." With the frog looking at him confused, he listened closely to what was going to be said. "Remember Natrual Instinct?"

Natural Instinct was a command he taught Maya and Koldo as they grew, trusting on what they prefer to fight. "I think we can use that as a better cover command than what most people do." In a sence, using a foreign language or a differnt phrase was a tactic to use to throw off the opponent slightly. However, once it gets translated, it becomes useless, as well as time to teach the Pokemon the difference took time as well.

"We can use Natural Instinct to represent Sucker Punch. Obviously, saying it out loud would force the opponent to use a nondamaging move. However, once they translate it to expect it, then you can change it from Sucker Punch to Taunt. Forcing the target to be offencive will make Sucker Punch easier to use and unable to stop." A nod from the frog confirmed his planned, a grin saying he really liked the idea. "Good, now get some rest." Returning him back, Douken laid himself back into bed.

"Now if only I could fall back asleep..."

PANE: Darryn Kellor

Lyla slammed the bathroom door behind her and ushered Pan to the far corner of the room where she took the other girl’s hands in her own and urged what she could out of her. The story was not a long one and details were clearly not on the young Researcher’s mind right then but in all, Lyla got the short of it. Some guy called Justin had met up with Pan a bunch of times and their attraction to each other had led to… the inevitable… at Starfall Field. Fair enough to the pair, Lyla could completely understand why they had taken that leap at that time but the consequence was rearing its foetal head as they spoke.

*Pan must be so scared…* Lyla thought to herself as she left the other girl at her dorm room door after their bathroom one-to-one. *I know a lot about baby Pokemon, sure, but none of us knows anything about what it’s like to be a real mother… Whatever she does, I’ll be there for her and that baby… But will the father? I don’t even know what he looks like… Do I?*

Lyla wracked her memeroy for some sort of clue as to which face in the crowd had been Justin but he eluded her completely. Would Pan be able to contact him particularly easily? Lyla wasn’t sure – if he was a trainer, it would be hard to get a message to him and it was unlikely she’d break the news over the phone or in a letter.

“This is, like, insane.” Lyla whispered to herself as she close her own door behind her and slumped down on the stiff mattress that made up the Pokemon Center’s bed. She clicked out a Pokeball and summoned her Azurill, Suika, and set about polishing his shiny blue skin while still thinking about her new friend.

“Oh, Suika,” Lyla smoothed his ears softly, “I need to talk to someone about this, but you won’t tell, right?”

*****

Darryn tapped at the view screen on the comm.. station in the Pokemon Center, still considering his decision as he waited for the line to connect. He had only spoken to the Professor a couple of times since his storage of Pokemon had begun in Pallet Town in the Kanto region and even then he had had Tuesday sat next to him while the arrangements were made. It was strange to be nervous talking to someone he was paying but this was a celebrity in his own right! It was Professor Oak!

“Good eve- Oh, hello Mister Kellor!” The grey-haired Professor dropped a book and pen to focus his attention on the screen that was no-doubt flickering to life at his end of the call. “I hope you are your Pokemon are faring well. I saw the news a little while ago – congratulations on your Contest win!”

Darryn smiled. This was as relaxed as he thought it would be. His shoulders lost tension and the Pokeballs on the table in front of him were eased from their deathgrip.

“Hello, Professor, thank you very much.” Darryn always tried to gloss over talking about his successes unless it was in front of a camera – that sort of talk won you sponsors and lost you friends. “I hate to just call and run off but I’ve got some preparations to make this evening for a trade tomorrow. Right now, I’d like to change up my team so I can focus on certain members while giving others a rest – would that be alright?”

“That’s completely fine, Mister Kellor!” Prof. Oak chuckled. “Just let me know who’s coming to stay and we’ll set them up right away!”

When the call was done, Darryn felt like his Pokeball belt was considerably lighter: Zulu his lazy Rampardos, November the beautiful Rapidash and India the timid Butterfree were all stored away safely in Pallet. That left Bravo, Romeo, Victor, Poliwag and Lady at his belt and one empty slot. It had been a while since he had had an incomplete team but there were very good reasons why he was not taking the deposited Pokemon – reasons that he had been considering for a long time.

Returning to his room, Darryn prepared swiftly for bed and tried not to pay attention to the spot at the side of him where Lady’s warm body normally lay.

“You’ll never leave my group.” He whispered to the Heal Ball on the desk as his eyes grew heavy and sleep claimed him.

And a Golurk

After the trip to the hospital, the group had arrived back at the apartment. Much to Pan’s relief, no one really said much afterwards, everyone going straight to their rooms. The researcher gave a brief nod to Lyla for the heart to heart from earlier. She had told her a good bit of the story behind what had happened, as well as assured her that she would tell Darryn and Douken as soon as she met with Justin. Whether that secret would be kept for that long was a problem for another day. Pan collapsed on the bed in exhaustion, not even bothering to change out of her ragged dress.

And then the sun rose…

~Coming up next, Luke Ario’s Sports Report is back with all the latest happenings in the trainer world.~

The radio blared on as the clock struck the desired time set. The sun was beginning to beam into Pan’s room, indicating that it was still fairly early in the morning. However, Pan was not to be found in her bed, nor were her pokemon roaming about. The researcher had taken full advantage of the rooftop for a private moment with her team. She had changed back into her usual outfit of jean shorts and purple vest; she had been up for quite some time. Sure she was exhausted from last night’s escapades, but there so much going on in her life. What was she going to do with a baby on the way? Surely she couldn’t continue adventuring around Furoh with Douken. Her duties at the museum would have to change, if there was even an opening for a primarily Petropolis position. What would she do then? Her friends would help as much as they could, but they could only do so much when their lives were taking them across the continent. Besides, she didn’t want to burden them. Then there was Justin. How would he react? Better yet, where was he? Such questions had kept her up for much of the early morning hours. Rather than lying restless in her bed, she decided to start tackling her problems, starting with telling her pokemon.

“So…that’s what’s going on. I don’t know what’s going to happen at the end, but we’re going to take it one step at a time.”

Reactions were mixed. Droid, now a massive golurk, stood in the same position and gave a thumbs up (Pan was worried that the expression was some automated response and not confirmation that things were OK. That was a problem for another time). Lima and Chi-Chi hugged the girl, seeming to be happy for her. This was followed by the giant head of an arcanine nuzzling Pan’s back, with her claydol rotating around the group. One pokemon was not happy: Turnip was in the corner, staring at the cityscape. Having the strength of a venusaur was supposed to prevent this kind of thing from happening. Ironically, his large size only kept him in a pokeball much of the time. Had he been a bit smaller, he could have prevented such advances on his Pan.

Pan left her other pokemon to comfort the sulking venusaur. She knelt down and hugged him as she whispered into his ear.

“Hey, this is no one’s fault but my own. Don’t beat yourself over this. And please don’t beat up Justin either, OK?”

With a bright smile, Pan rubbed her hands over the venusaur’s skin, still a little clammy after being frozen. The sunlight would do well for him, though he felt much better just with his human’s touch.

That didn’t mean he wasn’t going to squeeze Justin’s eyes out of their sockets the next time he saw him.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Pan had felt great after spending time with her pokemon, well enough to start making breakfast for the others. The researcher was even happier to be working with a full kitchen rather than a pot and campfire for once. It wasn’t because cooking outdoors was bad, but she hadn’t been in a kitchen in so long, it was almost a new experience. And so, she started cracking a few eggs in the pan and scrounged through the fridge anything else good to eat. Luckily, Darryn had a wide array of spices to work with, giving the eggs a good kick of taste.

As the others woke up to the sounds of sizzling eggs and meats, they too joined in the fun. Soon enough, they had a breakfast buffet in the middle of their giant round table. There was plenty of food for four humans and whatever pokemon were around. Pan thought this was so much better than eating in a pokemon center’s cafeteria. It was so much more…cozy, with only the people she cared about around her. No outside chatter to get in the way. Just them.

Pan had her cleffa in her lap, helping her chow down on a slice of cantaloupe. It was then that she had brought up today’s schedule.

“Douken, I might be a bit late for your match. There are a few errands I have to run.” Out of the corner of her eye, she noticed Lyla becoming very interested in her breakfast but continued on. “I think I’ll make it back in time for your victorious climax though.” She smiled as she took in a few bites of eggs.

Douken soon woke up with a long stretch, cracking his neck and loosening his body up as he mentally psyched himself up. Today was his second gym challenge. With some of the people he knew, like Jaima, being victorious here, as well as knowledge to research beforehand, he felt ready for anything. Still, if he wanted to be this energetic, he had to eat something. By the smell in the air, someone was thinking the same thing.

"Morning Pan," he said, exiting the room and seeing her cooking. "Smells great. I'll take care of the dishes for the Pokemon." Pulling out his bag full of berries, he began chopping away and cooking up some home recipes. As he cooked, however, one thought laid in the back of his mind: How do you feed an ancient Pokemon whose diet most likely lays within the depths of Starfall Field?

with Lyla and Darryn soon joining in, they got the tables set up, dishes spread out, and a good eat for the day ahead. With Pan's small announcement, he brushed it off, telling her, "No worries. I am sure you will walk into a major ending with epic moves. However, I bet he will be a bigger challenge than Otis, and yet not as hard as Troy since I don't have to worry about a score." Looking over to the other two, he added, "And if either of you have a camera, I bet we could record it as well."

“Cam-er-aaaa!” Lyla sang as she automatically delved into her large pink bag to grab the camcorder. “I did, like, this exact same thing for Darryn’s last contest, too. If you like, I can totally show you before your battle?”” She asked Douken, flipping the viewing arm and holding it up in front of her face. “And we can, like, start with interviews!”

Darryn rolled his eyes. Lyla really was energetic when it came to things that excited her. True, she was a terrible battler herself but supporting others and cheering their names while they took to the arena instead seemed right up her street. He, on the other hand, was less likely to cheer and more likely to take notes.
Since changing his Trainer career for that of a Co-Ordinator, Darryn had made sure to keep an eye on the way Jaima had trained when they had been travelling together. Contest battles were a fine balance between artistry and a last-one-standing competition that could swing in one direction or the other with only the smallest of well-executed techniques. By learning from the Trainer who was winning Gym Badges, Darryn had managed to hold off a technical KO in both of his own Contest battles and had won out on points at the end of the time limit. It had, however, been extremely closely fought in both cases and he had nearly suffered defeat with a twin knockout more than he’d like to accept. The only reason he had managed to avoid that fate twice was to use the techniques that Jaima had shown him in his own Gym Battles. Maybe Douken could do the same?

*I wonder who would win in a battle… Jaima or Douken?* Darryn mused to himself. Just because Jaima had more Gym Badges, it didn’t mean Douken couldn’t give him a run for his money.

Darryn ate the rest of his breakfast, considering the learning potential he could receive from the true Trainer in the room and was only brought out of the thought when he realised that he’d be saying goodbye to Poliwag that same day. He’d speak to the tadpole after the match – the trade would have to take place that afternoon because in the evening, his next destination on the way to the Grande Festival would be on its way!

Pan laughed as Lyla started waving the camera around in Douken’s face, playing the part of interviewer/tabloid reporter as she asked all sorts of questions (some of which may or may not have been a bit too personal). Her knees were on her chair as she filmed the trainer’s response to “Who would win in a fight between Koldo and Reep?” The appearance of a camera excited Lima, the pokemon climbing up upon the table for attention. The cleffa started singing and dancing to whatever tune was going through her head (she might have made it up), hoping the camera would turn to her. This lasted until she fell into a bowl of biscuits, of which she proceeded to partake in. The researcher took the cleffa off the table and onto her chair.

“You keep playing off the table. I’ll be right back, OK?”

The cleffa nodded as she continued to eat. Pan left the party to be alone on the balcony. There, she sat upon the ground, hidden below the windows. Nausea had overtaken her, and quite suddenly at that. She would be lying if this was the first time during her stay that she became ill, but that was not the case. The researcher tried to make excuses to herself for the cause; she was a fool to deny what had happened. She really didn’t want to get sick all over the balcony, but better here than all over the kitchen. All Pan had to do was keep a brave face until the others left for the gym.

“You’re not going to make this easy on me, are you?” Pan to her stomach.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just blocks away was the Petropolis Gym, which greatly resembled a cathedral. The building stood three stories high with a giant stain glass mural depicting an espeon and umbreon overlooking the street below. Inside however, there was only one floor with really high ceilings. The air was filled with Gregorian chants from a group of monks practicing for some service. A trio of murkrow made their home in the wooden rafters high above, their wings and calls echoed softly amongst the walls. Amongst the sights and sounds sat the gym leader Vega, reading yet another book in the middle of the arena floor. A pokeball rotated around his head, thanks to Vega’s ability of telekinesis. A challenger would soon approach; he would have to prepare himself mentally. However, he also had a visitor, and with it, the finishing of a favor.

“Ah, how like a winter hath our absences been. From thee, the pleasure of the fleeting year! What freezings have I felt, what dark days seen. What old December's bareness everywhere!” Vega greeted the old friend with an altered Shakespearean quote. It had been quite some time since he had met Fidona’s gym leader, at least in person.

“A simple hello would have worked,” Maxi replied. The Amazon King remained shirtless, revealing his suntanned skin to the world. Red pants and sandals rounded out his outfit. He didn’t seem to have any qualms about wearing his traditional clothing within the city. He took a pokeball off his belt and handed it to Vega.

“Water Stones are well hidden, but you now possess a Starmie.”

“And your Golduck has learned a wide range of psychic attacks,” Vega replied, pulling the floating pokeball out of the air and traded it back to Maxi. “Quite a talented pokemon, if I do say so myself. You know, we could have done all of this through the computers.”

“True, but I was here on business anyways. Jewels, museum presentation, that kind of thing.”

“Ah, well business. Anywho, how’s the tribe?”

“Growing. How are the…books?” The Amazon looked at the one story tall bookshelves in the corner of the gym. These shelves were on a rail, hiding a cozy study behind its walls.

“Funny you should mention that. I had just acquired a new set of Shakespearean stories from another Amazon.” Vega chuckled at the little pun he just made. Maxi’s face remained rather stoic. It wasn’t the first time he heard that one, nor would it be the last.

The doors once again flung open, but this visitor wasn’t a challenger either.

“Well well, two gym leaders. Must be my lucky day.”

“Officer Jenny!” Vega pushed himself off the floor to greet the young woman. He took her hand and, being the romantic he was, kissed the back. The officer held back her blush as Vega continued.

“To what service can I assist the fine people of Petropolis Police Department?”

“Well, it’s about the museum incident last night…”
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hidden within the reading area, Officer Jenny replayed the security footage from the museum’s ballroom to Vega and Maxi. It was not uncommon for the authorities to seek counsel from such trainers, particularly when pokemon are involved. Their eyes were intensely focused upon the case in the middle of the room: the one containing Ho-Oh’s feather. And yet, it remained in sight just before the camera was destroyed by (what she thought was) random crossfire.

“Whatever happened must have occurred after the camera was destroyed,” Jenny remarked. “Some coincidence.”

“If we assume it’s a coincidence,” Vega suggested. “Note the perpetrator of this attack: a sneasel. They’re known for their accuracy. For a small target such as a camera, it seems a bit much that it was destroyed by mere crossfire.”

“But why?” Jenny countered. “What would a group that worships Darkrai want with Ho-Oh’s feather? Is there any connection between the two legends?” Vega replied with a simple nod. As well versed in literature and folklore as he was, the gym leader had no stories of anything involving both Ho-Oh and Darkrai.

As the tape was replayed once more, Maxi leaned in to offer his insights.

“Their battle tactics. Most are focused around another exhibit. No one is focused on the feather. It was a crime of opportunity, not by the dark-robed ones. Watch the black markets, this feather will turn up once again.”

“Is it really that simple?” Vega replied “A random bystander saw a chance to grab a priceless artifact and snatched it? Is humanity one episode of mass hysteria away from turning us all into criminals?”

With that, Jenny took the tape back and prepared to depart.

“While you ponder sociology, I’ll be looking through the list of guests. It’s going to be one of those nights…”

With a small chuckle, Douken tried to answer as many questions as possible, trying to sway off some more personal items and and battle tactics he had for today's big battle were "top secret" and "Just wait and see." Even months of practice and planning can be ruined my a moment of mischief, and considering the opponent, there may as well be a ton of them, so he just kept in mind who he was using. "Both can be easily tricky fighters," Douken said, answering the question on the versus match, "and even if Reep is unaffected by Fighting moves, he can easily counteract. Besides, both of them are also getting used to their evolved states, so I bet they are eager to test it out."

Of course, Lima wanted to get in some spotlight and helped guide it to her eating the biscuits and Pan's dismissal from the table. Douken was feeling full anyways. "I think I'm good on food. Once we take care of dishes, we can continue the interview on the way there."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the couple blocks walk, there was something odd about the area. Sure, there was the giant cathedral that seemed really cool with the mural, as well as monks chanting like they were stranded in the mountains, but in front of the building was a police bike. Was an officer taking her free time to challenge the gym leader? Obviously not since he can hear more chanting than explosions of moves. Still, now wasn't the time to be asking questions, especially since he was not thinking the bike was being related to last night. He had to zone himself for this match up.

Opening the doors to the cathedral, he walked past of books, looking around for anyone who was predicting a challenger like how he would expect a psychic. Really, he was expecting to see someone at the front door, knowing who he was already. there was no introduction there, so he may as well make his. Taking a stand inside the middle of the building, Douken cried out, "VEGA! I am Douken Sota from Fidona Island! I am here to challenge you to a gym battle!" His voice echoed through the walls, as if the call searching out the leader himself.

He swore he thought he heard the chantings stop.

PANE: Darryn Kellor

Darryn scribbled a note on the kitchen table as Douken and Lyla prepared their things to go to the Gym. He signed it with a swirly D and a small x and folded it over neatly to write one final word on the paper – Pan.

Darryn’s note to Pan (click to show)

Following Douken to the Pokemon Center allowed Darryn to reminisce his own Gym experience and the battles that he had watched Jaima win across Furoh. Surely the other trainer would now be on his way to Fidona to get his final badge? If that was the case, Darryn was still far behind – only just preparing to set out for Ribbon number three. He had promised a proper battle when they met up next and he didn’t want to be left behind before that day came.

The inside of the Petropolis Gym was exactly as Meiko’s video had depicted it and almost immediately Darryn knew that the Gym was not in ‘operating’ condition as the bleachers were retracted into the walls and the battlefield was not marked out across the concrete slabs that made the floor. Douken’s call for the Gym Leader echoed around the room and Darryn led Lyla to the side of the hall in preparation for the Leader’s entrance and the battle to commence.

After Douken yelled for the gym leader, the sliding door to the study opened. Jenny was the first to emerge, giving a quick glance to the group as she passed them by. Shortly after, a man in a red robe and long black hair emerged out of the study. He walked into the light coming through the stain glass window. Vega stared at the group as he focused in on the spiky-haired kid.

“Well, isn’t this a nice turn of events,” Vega said. “I was just entertaining some friends but lo and behold! A challenger approaches! This would certainly make for an interesting double battle, wouldn’t you say Maxi?”

Out of the shadows, Fidona’s gym leader appeared by Vega’s side, almost as if he were about to take part in the battle. However, he stood still, his arms folded as he waited for Douken’s reaction.

“Then he’d have no reason to come home,” Maxi responded. “Well met, Douken Sota.”
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

“Hey, Justin. It’s me, Pan. I’m in Petropolis now and I’m wondering if we can meet. Call me back at this number, OK? Bye.”

Pan hung up her new pokegear, her latest acquisition in a list of errands. Though her poketch was good, it lacked a phone function that didn’t involve yelling at her watch. Of course, she was far more concerned with getting in contact with Justin. Darryn was suspecting something, and she really didn’t know how long she could keep her secret. All she needed to do was talk to Justin first. If only he would pick up the phone…

Pan was needed back at the museum, as requested. There was a favor that needed to be done. And that where she was now: within the office of Professor Stone.

“Ah, Ms. Gibbs,” the professor replied. “Please, have a seat.”

As the researcher sat down, she looked around at the various artifacts set around her. Fossil fish lined the walls, numerous clay pots depicting all kinds of patterns littered the floor, and ancient scrolls were set in a canister in a corner of the room. Evidently, the professor wasn’t a very tidy person. Her attention refocused back to Stone.

“Everything OK after last night?” she asked.

“Well, during our clean-up, we found out that…there’s no delicate way to put this, but…it seems those cultists also made off with Ho-Oh’s feather.”

My feather,” Pan replied with some surprise. “What would they want to do with that?”

“We’re not sure, but the police are still investigating. It might have simply been a crime of opportunity for all we know. I’m sure they’ll bring it back home soon enough. For now though, I have another matter for you to attend to.”

The professor pulled out a pokeball out of his pocket, specifically an ultra-ball. Pan instantly recognized it as the one she had handled last night. It was the one with the shiny aerodactyl inside.

“Our board of directors is not comfortable having this pokemon on display, not after last night. We’re currently a little short-handed of trainers, so I kindly proposed that you take on the training. If I recall, the pokemon had accepted its capture by you, so it must have some sort of respect for you. That’s enough to satisfy me.”

The professor rolled the pokeball over to Pan, who caught it within her palm. She probably didn’t need an ornery ancient pokemon on top of everything else, but this was part of the job. It was job that had become much more important than before, especially with a baby on the way. Not that she would tell the professor that: he likely wouldn’t let her go on expeditions, thus losing her job. With that thought in mind, she handed over one of her pokeballs to the professor.

“You’ll watch Pivot for me?”

“It would be my pleasure. Besides, I always wanted to study the ancient lock technology in conjunction with claydol…”

The sight of Maxi was one hell of a surprise to Douken, since he had no idea he was here. In an instant, he held out his right arm in front of his chest and gave him bow, eyes staring at Maxi: a tradition to his tribe when meeting important figures when a handshake could not really suffice or directing higher members of his tribe. Being the leader of the Amazons, truly he had to pay his respects.

But, the way he stood... was he going to fight alongside Vega?! Surely, no one yet has decided to challenge two gym leaders at once, and if he did, would it mean getting both badges at once? Mixing up Vega's Dark/Psychic powers with Maxi's Fighting/Water strength... And if the rules were like he heard and researched, who would take the third Pokemon? Or would he be granted a fourth? No matter what, the two together would make a tough challenge.

"It has been a while Maxi. I am not sure if you are here to take part or to watch, but either choice is fine with me. No matter what choice, I shall reveal the 'road that I have walked,' just as you say yourself. Of course, if I do take on two gym leaders at once, there would be a similar reward if I win, right?"

Lowering his arm, he let his bag drop to the floor before removing the top shirt and rolling up the sleeves of the t underneath. He did this to show the marks on his shoulders, proof of the clan he was apart of.

I still don't know if this is going to change my tactics before the match even begins...

As Douken was talking about getting two badges for one battle, Maxi simply walked across the stage and ruffled Douken’s spiky hair with a large hand. Even with the challenger trying to act tough, Fidona’s gym leader had no problem treating him like one of the kids in the village. It wasn;t that long ago that Douken really was just a kid.

“Maybe in your dreams. For now, I’ll leave your performance as a surprise.”

With that, he gave a nod to Vega and walked out of the gym. Vega then turned his focus to the half-naked challenger.

“So…you’ve come to challenge me? I should warn you that I wield some the more powerful types of pokemon. Their strength is not simply in sheer power but in wisdom. It is a reflection on the people of Petropolis: they use both qualities to make this the bustling city it is.”

A quick swipe of his arm unleashed three pokemon onto the arena. The two in front were perhaps the more unique choices in Vega’s bunch. One was the pokemon he had just received from Maxi: a starmie. The other was an abstract looking flying type: a sigilyph. Finally, an exeggutor was at the gym leader’s side, his heads looking rather silly as they gazed around with dazed smiles.

“Success always comes when preparation meets opportunity,” Vega spouted off another quote. “I hope you have both.”

Douken's head went into his shoulders as Maxi rubbed his head. No surprise he declined the two badge challenge, but considering the position, it was worth a shot. Still, declining to even watch meant he wouldn't see any hints on their gym battle against each other.

Now what came to Douken's surprise was what looked like 3 psychic types! Sure, the thing hovering in the air could be dark, but the way it looked he couldn't really get a big hint off of. Still, it looked like he was expecting.

"I was expecting a Flying type," he told Vega as he tossed three small Pokeballs over to Darryn, saying who he was not using. "Thanks to Jaima, Tag, and Thursday, I had a suspicion that you were hiding a third type. However, since both are weak against Bug, it comes to no surprise. But enough yacking, let's get down to business."

Taking two more Pokeballs from his belt, one remaining, he enlarged the duo, revealing his opening party of Koldo and Reep, which may be extremely nuts! Koldo has a major disadvantage against Psychic types! Well, after the last gym match, he did promise Koldo the next one, and if Dark types were to be used, Koldo would have the advantage. Reep, being a Ghost, already has one on the Psychics. Lets get started!

Even before the battle started, Koldp's claws showed a hue of purple for a moment and Reep's eye letting off a bit of a pulse, showing off their Poison Touch and Pressure abilities.

"Koldo, Swagger! Reep, Confuse Ray!" Opening up strong in his hand, he decided to play the Confusion card on both opponents. With the Dusclops eye pulsing, it send a strange wave around th Starmie, wrapping around the starfish's mind and affected its attention. However, Koldo went over to taught the Sigliph, calling it weak and useless to piss it off. Sure, Swagger has a consequence of strengthening the target's attack, but Psychics really don't focus on that.

“Aha! Double confusion. A strong start indeed.” Unlike the other gym leaders, Vega was more apt to deliver compliments to his challengers. He liked to give credit where credit was due. That really didn’t help his pokemon team however. The starmie was spinning around erratically, incapable of a perfect rotation. The sigilyph too was flailing about, more for anger than confusion. Still, the gym leader kept calm and let the battle continue. He stepped forward and put his forefinger to his temple.

“Focus, you two. Psybeam! Psyshock! To the toxicroak!”

In a tactic he learned from his battle with Jaima, Vega used his own abilities to secretly communicate with his pokemon. In this case, he used telepathy to obscure his commands. Both pokemon were able to withhold their confusion long enough to fire off beams of psychic energy at the frog. Vega would take full advantage of the opponent’s double weakness and take him out early before more status ailments start spreading.

Telepathy. This was going to slow down reaction time. "Koldo, behind Reep, now!" Being physical psychic waves, Douken had to play cards that would let Koldo move out of the way and let the ghost take attacks that weren't very effective. Still, the reaction between did get both of them hit, Koldo taking the Psybeam. "Are you two alright?" Douken called out to his team.

"I am alright. Koldo seems to be quite phased," echoed in his mind. it was Reep. Seemed like evolving upped up her town telepathy, which meant physical contact wasn't needed. Just the question was could she read his? Not the time to test.

"Koldo, Natural Instinct! Reep, Shadow Punch!" With the waves out of the way, the Toxicroak started to walked up, eying them carefully. If they moved in for an attack, then it would be a massive Sucker Punch. If they were to set up a defense, it would be a taunt.Still, they would be going after a quick kill on the frog, so an attack was being expected.

But who? Koldo thought quickly, skimming the two opponents. The one in the air. Seems like fun. He was now ready for the Siglyph.

But was Siglyph ready for Reep? With her newly developed fist, she punched into the ground, her arm diving into the shadows of the room, soon to come up from the Avianoid's own shadow to strike. The only way to dodge it was to have no shadow around you it seems, but the closer you are to the light, the brighter your shadow, and the darker it is, the more it is around you.

Whatever Vega commanded his pokemon was not known. Both of the pokemon crashed right into each other, a side effect of their confusion. While still on the ground, a shadowy fist punched the sigilyph back into the air. Though the avianoid kept flight to avoid crashing to the ground, he was a bit worse for wear.

“Hm, that was unfortunate,” Vega quipped, trying to figure out what he would do next.

Meanwhile…

Pan was walking the streets of downtown Petropolis, her arcanine close behind. Crowds of shoppers parted as the giant dog passed through. Indeed, the researcher had somewhat less fear of criminal activity when her bodyguard could breathe fire. Still, the landscape was changing from the clean modern look around the museum to a more gritty appearance of the less prosperous side of town. There were no skyscrapers in this area of the city: most buildings weren’t higher than four stories. Paint was peeling off most of the shops and apartments, exposing sheetrock and brick. Sidewalks also suffered from a lack of maintenance, cracked and full of weed growth. The houses that she passed were on the brink of collapse, their roofs dented inwards and foundations split in two. Most of these buildings were abandoned as people began moving to the wealthier side of town, but there was still a small population around. For a few times, Pan wondered if she was in the right place. She took a look at the piece of yellow paper in her hand, where she circled the name “Justin Smart”.

Looking back up, she saw the matching address upon a set of two buildings. The apartments weren’t quite in a state of disrepair as the other buildings, but they could have used some maintenance. Nonetheless, it was definitely the place. Pan recalled her arcanine and entered the complex.

It wasn’t long before she approached the door she was looking for. This was it: Pan was about to enter Justin’s home and unleash a life-changing truth upon him, one that would alter the course of his fate as it did hers. There was some doubt whether she should tell him, but that moment was far past. He had to know.

Knock Knock

The door opened to reveal a giant blond man. They both looked at each other in confusion. Pan looked back at her paper, but the man kept staring at her with a goofy smile. It was the girl who finally broke the awkward silence.

“Um…doesn’t Justin Smart live here?”

“Oh yes, he’s my neighbor. But he hasn’t been here in months. However…he might turn up soon. Why don’t you wait inside? I assure you I’m far better company- hey, where are you going? Man, she sure runs fast…”
