"So what's the plan?" Nate asked.

"Haven't thought it through yet," Justin replied.

"Yeah, thinking doesn't seem to be your strong suit. Maybe we should take a little bit of time to figure out how we're gonna go about this."

"I don't see how we need such a big plan," Justin shrugged. "We just gotta let loose some chaos into this place."

The two Team Deception members stood, side by side, in front of a caged Seviper. Surrounding them were other caged pokemon, captured, not by pokeballs, but by hand. Nate and Justin had, themselves, captured this particular Seviper, which hadn't bothered them so much until looking at it like this. It was angry, afraid and sad, refusing to blink as it stared down its captors.

They made a promise - Well, Justin made a promise - to Taggarty Lee, to find a way to release the Seviper from its cage. After all, they had abused Tag's trust and tricked him into helping them capture it, hence his interest in the case. What made things tricky was that these caged animals were recently on display for a zoo as a front by Team Deception. Now, about 25 pokemon were locked up in a warehouse in central Gigarte. Justin and Nate, members of Team Deception, could not simply release it, as it would be known that it was them. Leaving the organization was potentially deadly in and of itself, but betraying it? Well, they didn't want to be caught.

"They know we're here," Nate said. "That's why we need a plan. If something goes wrong right now, of course they're gonna blame us."

"So what do you suggest?" Justin asked.

"We need to find somebody who can take the blame for us," Nate replied. "Think about it, man, there's young pokemon trainers all over the damn place just looking for an opportunity to be heroes. Let's just give them that opportunity."

"That sounds, uh-"

"We're still in Team Deception, after all," Nate smiled. "Come on, let's go find us some fall guys."

Kenz's Squad (PANE)

Kenz lurched forward as the tour bus sputtered slowly to a halt in front of a large, colorful gate with "Gigarte's Greatest Zoo!" in large, red letters. Frantic kids ran around the park, with young mothers screaming and running at the same time, trying to catch their little balls of hyperactivity.

"I guess this is it," Kenz muttered to her Pidgey, who sat obediently in her lap. Pidee made some chirps and flew off of Kenz's lap to finally get some fresh air. He, unfortunately, was met with the tall beehive hair of the lady directly in front of him.

"AAAAAIIIHHH!" The lady shrieked, flailing her hands about and running out of the bus in fear. Kenz quickly ran through the folded doors of the clunky automobile and followed the lady, who seemed to be getting Pidee stuck in her hair even more by her desperate swatting. Pidee, meanwhile, looked as if he was drowning in the lady's platinum locks. He pushed her mane of thick hair away in desperation, pulling up and taking large breaths of air before being swatted back down by the lady's plump hands.

"Please, just let me help!" Kenz yelled after the lady, who was heading straight for the Seviper enclosure. Kenz finally caught up to her when she barreled into the fence and knocked herself out. Pidee climbed out, covered in fluffs of blonde. He gave an indignant huff and walked snootily over to Kenz, wiping puff off of his down with each step.

"Oh, man..." Kenz muttered, staring at the poor lady who lied unconscious on the ground. She faced the two men staring near the Seviper cage, her face turning beet red at their incredulous faces. "Would you believe this was an accident?"

Nate and Justin looked at the girl, then looked at each other. Nate raised both eyebrows at Justin, who sighed inaudibly. He looked at Kenz, then back at Nate and said, quite plainly. "No." Then, he paused and looked back at the girl. "Wait. I know you."

How did he know her? It didn't make sense for him to know a girl so young. It didn't make sense, which means he should remember. How often did he meet kids? There was one time which stood out: The events at Starfall Field. There were two kids in Team Rock, and this was definitely one of them. Kenz and Liz were the two girls but there was simply no way he was going to remember which was which.

"You do?" Nate asked. "How?"

"You were at Starfall Field," Justin crossed his arms. "When the meteors fell. We awakened Regirock."

Of course, the more he remembered, the more he realized she would be just perfect for the job. Kid like this would never turn down the opportunity to thwart a scheme which hurt pokemon. She risked her life to venture into the underground and then into a temple filled with fossil pokemon, so why wouldn't she risk just a little bit more to free these kidnapped pokemon?

Still, they had to be subtle about it.

Kenz tilted her head in confusion for a moment, then blinked and nodded quickly with understanding.

"Oh, yeah! I remember you! You were always hanging around Pan," she said, smiling as she stood. Pidee was still attempting to swat remains of platinum blonde off of his feathers. Kenz picked him up in her arms, and he cawed at the sudden lift.

"Oh, you stubborn little thing!" Kenz scolded, and Pidee quickly closed his beak and looked away. "So, weren't you guys in Lenolia, too? I saw a news reel about that shadow Zoroark. Pretty intense, huh?"

She noticed the two had Pokeballs on their belts. "So, what kinds of Pokemon do you have?"

Nate and Justin watched as the girl tried to handle her pokemon, then continued to ask them a question about their pokemon. In all fairness, it was a good starting point for pokemon trainers who'd never met. For a majority of them, their pokemon were the biggest part of their lives.

"Well, um," Nate began. "We have bunch,"

"I'm more concerned about these pokemon," Justin said, not wanting to waste much time. "You know, caged pokemon are still wild. Capturing one in a pokeball usually domesticates them, but these guys are wild and want to be free. Just look at this Seviper. See how scared it is? It's hard to watch."

"Yeah, but," Nate shrugged somewhat dramatically. "What can a couple of kids like us do?"

"I don't know," Justin sighed. "Probably nothing. What do you think, uh," he began and looked to Kenz. "Sorry, I don't remember your name."

Kenz shrugged and looked at the Seviper. It hissed at her, then bit at the bars on its cage. Kenz jumped back, afraid of the thing if it got out. Pidee cawed at the Seviper, obviously protective of his master. Kenz took a small breath, then looked back at Justin, ignoring the goosebumps pricking the back of her neck like incessant needles. The Seviper made her extremely... uncomfortable, to put it nicely. To tell the truth, all poison types put her on edge, but she never knew why. Maybe it was the prospect of the venom ever reaching her personally. It could eat away at her skin, at her organs, at her life...

Kenz blinked sharply, shoving the gory and disturbing images out of her mind by force. Poison was a problem, but if it didn't get her, she would be fine. She would be fine. The thought repeated like a broken record in her mind, a temporary band-aid on her fears.

"Well, kids can do a lot. You could go to the manager if you want," she rationalized in response to Justin's question. "And you really don't look like kids, anyway. The manager would probably listen to you."

Justin and Nate looked at each other, suppressing eye rolls. How hard could it be to convince a kid with pokemon to act like a hero? "I dunno," Nate shrugged. "I doubt he'd listen to us. He probably makes a lot of money on this stuff, and there's really no point in appealing to his good side. I think the only way to get these pokemon free is to either buy them from the owner of this place, or free them ourselves."

"Free them ourselves?" Justin asked, a bit overly dramatic. "Are you crazy? Think about how much trouble we could get into!"

"Yeah," Nate sighed. "You're probably right."

Justin just rolled his eyes and sighed. If the girl didn't volunteer to free them on her own, he'd just have to be a little more direct. Hell, maybe even pay her off or something, but she had to be the one to free them from their cages. Justin and Nate could help, keep anyone from coming in and seeing her, but she had to be the one to do it because, worst case scenario, if she got caught, she could fight her way out and that would be the end of it. If Justin or Nate got caught, they'd probably be hunted down.

"Nevermind, then, I guess," Justin said. "I guess these pokemon will be imprisoned for the rest of their lives. Anyway, it was nice to see you again, kiddo," he still didn't know her name. He turned and began to leave the area, and Nate reluctantly followed him. They were hoping for the girl to stop them and offer to help. If not, it was Plan B.

Kenz's Squad (PANE)

(Bunnying done with Dragonwish2's permission. This was a joint post that we worked out via PM.)

Liz stood in the battle room of Gigarte’s Pokémon Center, with a Riolu and Oshawott standing before her. The Riolu was poised like a cobra about to strike, while his comrade giggled and swished his tail around playfully. Liz watched them silently for long seconds before abruptly shouting, “Ryan, use force palm on Oreo and throw him in the air! Keep yourself straight when you start flying, Oreo.” Her Pokémon reacted swiftly, Oreo holding himself stiffly and bracing as Ryan threw him in the air, the Oshawott spinning rapidly. “That was great Oreo,” Liz called, “now keep yourself spinning and use water gun.” The Oshawott sprayed water wildly in the air, the droplets splashing Ryan below. Oreo began flailing as he fell and Ryan rushed to catch him, the Riolu barely grabbing him in time before he could meet an untimely fate on the dirt field. Liz grimaced. “Okay, we’ll work on that again later. Good Contest practice though. Remember Oreo, you have to keep straight and then transition into the next step once you reach the pinnacle.” She returned the Oshawott, leaving Ryan out to leave the room with her. A Chansey stood outside the door, waiting for Liz to step clear of the door before locking it with a touch of its hand. “Thanks,” Liz said gratefully, then walked to the entrance of the Pokémon Center. One of the Nurse Joys approached her as she entered the lobby.

“Hello Liz, I’m glad to say that all of your other Pokémon are in perfect health. Your Riolu and Oshawott are also doing well,” Joy said with a nod and glance to Ryan. She bowed and held out a silver tray containing four pokéballs. Liz took them and clipped them onto her belt.

“Thank you, Nurse Joy, for checking my Pokémon and allowing me to use one of the battle rooms,” Liz said.
“I’m happy to help! I hope you had a good practice session.”

Nurse Joy left, leaving Liz to sit in one of the chairs of the lobby with her Riolu sitting on the floor, eyes closed in some form of meditation. Her forehead furrowed as she concentrated, frustration filling her. She had decided to start practicing for her first contest, but she only had a few ideas for the Battle Round, and she had nothing to even build off of for the Appeal Round. I need to find some inspiration, she thought, and even as she thought it she had an idea. Earlier she had found an interesting flier, but she was lost as to where she had put it. She looked to her Riolu, who opened an eye and stared at her through it. He rose and pointed to her pocket. Liz silently thanked him as she pulled out a folded paper from the pocket, reading the words again to herself.

Gigarte’s Greatest Zoo, open Mondays through Fridays! While it held no time, Liz figured that it wouldn’t be closed in the morning. She glanced at her Emanation Pokémon and stood, turning to the doorway. “Well,” she said, “let’s just hope this flyer doesn’t put us in as much trouble as the last one did.” Ryan crossed his arms but was silent, but inside he was firmly telling himself he would somehow get Liz to leave quickly, if he could help it.

~~~~~~~~~~~
The zoo was full of noise as she approached. Chaos reigned from children and parents as they hurried to see all of the caged Pokémon. Liz looked around, dismayed by the lack of awe-inspiring sights. She walked in time with her Riolu, who had decided to try and walk as fast as he could through the crowd. Liz stayed behind him, trusting his aura abilities to guide her to something interesting. He paused at a cage holding sleeping Persian, his ears twitching. He turned his head slowly, staring off at something. “What is it?” Liz asked, eager to continue moving. Ryan grabbed her hand and dragged her swiftly through the crowd,
Liz squinted at the distant cage as she neared. A depressed Seviper lay curled inside it, staring at the three nearest figures. One was a young man, perhaps sixteen, with a very relaxed posture and baggy clothes. The second was older, twenty Liz guessed, with bulging muscles and shaggy black hair. The last was a girl around Liz’s age with short brown hair and pale skin.
Ryan stopped, releasing his trainer’s hand and pausing, suddenly tense. Liz studied the girl, her eyes sparkling and her mouth broadening into a smile. “Ken-!” she began, but her mouth was promptly covered by a little furry palm. Liz stared at her Riolu, confused until she began to hear the conversation. The first voice came from the casually dressed teenager.
"I dunno," a high tenor voice rang. "I doubt he'd listen to us.” His voice dropped from Liz’s hearing range, to where all she could catch were pieces. “I think the only way to get these… free is to either… owner of… or free them ourselves." Liz stared in bewilderment. Was the man considering breaking apart the public zoo and releasing potentially dangerous Pokémon? The Seviper did seem to be upset at its holding. Another voice cut in, stabbing at Liz’s ears with great familiarity.
"Free them ourselves?" The second man scoffed, his louder voice enunciating each syllable as a sarcastic child might. "Are you crazy? Think about how much trouble we could get into!" Liz relaxed. One of them was thinking, it least. Even so, something about the way he spoke made Liz nervous. From what little came to her mind at his voice, she wasn’t sure he was normally so doubtful.
The teenager sighed heavily. "You're probably right."
There was an awkward pause until the bulky man spoke again. "Never mind," he said, trailing off into a mutter. "I guess these Pokémon will be imprison for the rest of their lives. Anyway, it was nice to see you again, kiddo.” He turned, shuffling away. The teenager followed hesitantly. A realization came upon Liz, and she juggled it over within her mind until she had come to a decision. Liz slowly stepped out, controlling her speed to make it appear she had been casually walking the entire time. She smiled at Kenz, waving.
“Hey! I can’t believe you’re here. How are you?” Ryan followed her, arms crossed and staring at the two men. Liz followed his gaze, her mind clicking together the subtle clues of his appearance and voice. “Oh, you’re Justin. We met at Starfall Field.” The muscular man had fought off Kabuto and Golett with Team Rock using several strong Pokémon. The only one Liz remembered clearly was his Pinsir. It had scared Liz out of her wits as it hacked apart the attacking Pokémon; at the time it was a good thing, but Liz didn’t want to be facing the Pinsir in her life time. She restrained herself from shuddering at the idea. Justin had also taken on one of the obstacles before Liz, even though she had volunteered at first. He seemed trustworthy to Liz at the time. Her shoulders relaxed and she let her tightened muscles unwind.
The Emanation Pokémon was unsettled as he continued to stare unblinking at Justin- and he noticeably kept himself between the men and Liz. She ignored the behavior, as in the situation and with recent events it seemed natural. The Riolu had grown to be overprotective ever since a large man at a drought-ridden wildlife section in Gigarte attacked her. Luckily, Officer Jenny had arrived in time to handle him as well as the other goons after Liz managed to get away from the one who had fought her.
Liz resumed speaking, glancing at the Seviper. “Are all of these Pokémon wild? I mean, it’s not like there are trainers who put their Pokémon on display in a cage, but you’d think they should be in a larger and open area, if still fenced in.” She came upon a realization, that maybe, just maybe, it wasn’t the craziest thing to help innocent Pokémon go free. She wanted to confirm something first. Liz reached down to her belt, retrieving a shrunken pokéball. It expanded in her hand and she tossed it into the air.
“Guini, come on out!”
A Ralts appeared in a flash of blue light, staring up at Liz with covered eyes. She was very caring, and the psychic Pokémon had created an odd ability to share images and broken thoughts with her trainer. Liz had wanted to test it, and she now held an idea of what to ask and how to do it then. Liz took a deep breath and concentrated. A picture of the Seviper formed in her mind, as well as a question. Was it in pain, or hurt?
Distrust. Fear. Anger. Longing. Liz imagined the Seviper slipping through the zoo, its jaws opening and eating small Pokémon easily. She shuddered and asked another question.
Could you- calm it? Liz stopped, frustrated that she was unable to expand upon it. It felt as though she were stuck in quick sand; the harder she tried, the faster she fell into its murky depths.
Hesitantly, she felt a response.
Perhaps.
She turned back to her friend, her face straight and solemn. “I heard you say something about freeing them.” Liz was tired of being left with questions unasked in suspicious events, and she thought it was time to put an end to her confusion and ignorance.
“I’m i-"
----
"W-wait!" Kenz suddenly exclaimed, grabbing Nate's shoulder and turning him around. "I don't know what your plan is, but you need my help...I think." The last part was muttered, almost inaudible. She was still very unsure of herself, and being around two older men did not help her self-esteem.
Suddenly, Liz burst in, saying a quick hello to Kenz. Kenz hardly had time to be excited before Liz nearly agreed to help the two older gentlemen. "Stop!" She interrupted, grabbing Liz's arm forcefully before she could finish her sentence. Her sudden interjection caused everyone to stare at her while she came up with an excuse.
"I-I-It's been such a long time!" Kenz quickly saved, keeping her grip on her friend's forearm. "Let's catch up! Will you excuse us for a minute?" She directed her question at Justin and his friend, but didn't wait for their answer. She dragged her friend to the neighboring exhibit, an enclose full of Ponytas, and left the two guys and the unconscious body. Ryan stayed behind reluctantly, though in the end he trusted Liz to Kenz and stayed put, still watching Justin and Nate. Guini's invisible gaze followed them before she turned to the Seviper, who merely blinked at her before returning its gaze to Justin.
"What was that for?" Liz asked, angry and a little hurt. Her eyes were large as saucers and had a very fragile look, like they were painted china. Kenz immediately softened, slumping her shoulders and regretting her outburst.
"I-I'm sorry," Kenz replied guiltily. "I overreacted. You can yell at me now." She pulled her hand away and backed up, her head down and her hands up in surrender. She was surprised to feel arms around her neck in a hug, not as a strangling. She returned the hug, finally feeling the rush of excitement for seeing her friend again. Liz released, and her countenance changed from friendly to nervous.
"So, we shouldn't help them?" She asked, her brown furrowed in confusion.
"No! That's not what I mean. I mean-" Kenz shook her head, trying to put the words together in her mind. "I think we should, but we need to watch each other's backs. I don't want either of us getting hurt, and something about those guys screams 'Danger!' to me. We're a team, right?"
"Right." Liz smiled, and her eyes smiled with her.
"So, how's Oreo? I miss that little Oshawott," Kenz pondered, returning the goofy smile. Liz grabbed a green Pokeball off her belt, clicked the button, and in a flash of red light, Oreo was standing proudly in front of Kenz. She patted his little head and tickled his neck with her index finger. He giggled and swung his tail playfully, happy to see Kenz again after the battle at the Safari Zone.
"Looks fit as ever. Let's go see those guys and tell them we're in." Kenz scooped up Oreo and handed him to Liz, then they walked back, both more confident now that they had each other.
"We're in."
Just as he hoped, the girl insisted that Justin and Nate stop and immediately offered her help, which was perfect. A plan would need to be hatched, but before any other exchanges occurred, another girl, also familiar, jumped forward and introduced herself to Justin, of course not reminding him of her name. She remembered his, though, which was certainly awkward.
"Hi," he said, scratching the back of his neck. One was Liz and one was Kenz, he remembered that much. But as of yet, he hadn't figured out how to differentiate the two. Not one had mentioned their names! "Sorry, I suck with names." He could either have some dignity and admit he didn't remember, or he could guess, and have a 50/50 chance to get the name right. He opted for the former.
She took her friend to the side, but left a Riolu apparently to keep an eye on Nate and Justin. "What the hell, man?" Nate laughed. "How many kids were at Starfall Field?"
"A lot," Justin sighed.
"It's possible I owe my life to them," Nate crossed his arms with a smile. "If that meteor was as big as you said-"
"Yeah, it woulda wrecked Furoh. But I guess, by that logic, you owe me your life too, huh?"
"Yeah, I guess so. What's my first command as your new slave?"
"Get me a sandwich," Justin grinned.
"No," Nate said, plainly.
"Fair enough," Justin shrugged.
Then, the girls came back in prompt agreement. It appeared they wanted to help the pokemon out. "Awesome," Justin smiled. "That's great. So, I think the way we should play this, then, is to sort of assign roles. Nate and I look a little suspicious, I know that, so it's gonna be hard for us to get the upperhand on a guard. But you two, you're a lot smarter than a guard will take you for. It'll probably be easy for you to get a key off of one of them if you use your brains."
"Yeah," Nate nodded. "Like, one of you pretend to be hurt, or something, and while a guard is trying to figure out what happened, the other can snatch the key,"
"Yeah," Justin said. "Or something. Whatever."
"Me and Justin will be nearby, making sure nothing goes wrong. See, we have pretty strong pokemon, so if something goes wrong, we'll be able to step in to make sure no one gets hurt."
"Thing is," Justin continued. "We'll probably need to find the head zookeeper to get the key to the cages. I dunno, if you two have any ideas, your input is welcome."
Liz pondered the task set before her by Justin and the young man. Her previous confidence drained like sand through her fingers. She thought, where did the thrill of a crime go? All assurance that nothing could go wrong left her. She felt empty without it, and the reality of the situation pierced at her conscience viciously. “Umm, we could try and pretend to be sick. Most parks have a sort-of headquarters for the staff, right? All we have to do is get them to take us to it.” Liz stumbled over her words. She mentally berated herself and was again wondering how a girl who prided herself in her honesty could fall to such a low act as lying.
“Er, I could ask to use their phone, or something, and say it’s too big of an emergency to wait. If they’re hasty enough, they won’t realize they could just help us use a payphone, but take us to the HQ and have us use the phone there. Then we swipe the keys.” Liz snapped her fingers. She felt a sudden surge of anxiety and excitement, coursing through her and filling her with an oddly strange but pleasant wildness. Liz withdrew one of her Pokéballs’ again, returning her Ralts and releasing her mischievous dark-type Pokémon. Kelli shimmered for a brief second before grinning and staring up at Liz like a puppy, her tail wagging. The Zorua seemed to know that her trainer was going to try something of an impish nature, and was eager to take part in the plot.
Liz crouched down before her Pokémon.
“How well can you pull off a child in distress?” She asked. Her Zorua barked happily and flashed red.
In her place stood a blonde little girl wearing a pink dress, trembling with her thumb in her mouth and her eyes full of tears. Covered by the girl’s hair sat two black and red ears folded down in an attempt to hide them. Liz rose, nodding in approval. “Nice touch with the fake tears move. Now, let’s see about those ears.” She pulled her bag from her back and withdrew a folded blue fedora. Liz popped it open and set it over the girl’s hair. “Think you can make it look pink?”
The hat shimmered and transformed into a shade of pink that accentuated the dress. Bows appeared along the rim within seconds. Liz’s eyes sparkled as she adjusted the hat into a different position, tilting sideways in an adorably messy fashion.
“All done! Now just try to keep your arms from falling into that odd folded pose- don’t try to pretend you didn’t, you always seem to when you act like a person- and you’ll be fine. Don’t forget to keep quiet, either, no matter what.”
Liz turned to her teenage friend with a smile of reassurance. “Alright Kenz, ready to get to work?” To the boys, “As soon as we have the keys, we’ll meet you at that Ekans exhibit over there.” She pointed east at the small enclosure full of the writhing snake Pokémon. “If we meet here again it might be suspicious.”
She waited for their response before confirming with them, and then took Kelli’s other false hand in her own. Somehow, the mischievous Pokémon gave her a sense of hope for their endeavor. It was nothing like that of which her Ralts could provide, but it was a small comfort she was grateful nonetheless. Liz felt safer with her friends near; she knew she would need them soon enough.
