Anyone may contribute to this. If you do, when I list the origin, I will say that it is submitted by you.
I am not copying this from anything, I use my own mind. And some dictionaries. Some are obvious, some now. Let's go! Victini: Vict(victory abbr.)+ini(just a name suffix, like in "Houdini" OR a play on "tiny")= Tiny Victory *Submitted by Knightrunner* Snivy: Sn(short for snake)+ivy= Ivy snake, or snake ivy. Servine: Ser(short for serpent)+vine= Vine serpent, or serpent vine. Serperior: Serp(serpent abbreviation)+erior(as in inferior or superior)= superior serpent, or simply just a play on "superior." Tepig: Te(short for Temperature)+pig=Temperature pig Pignite: Pig+nite(ignite abbr.)= pig ignite. Emboar: Em(ember abbr.)+boar= ember boar. Oshawott: Osha(might be a corruption of the word Ocean. The 'c' in ocean sounds like an 'sh' thus Osh, the 'aw' in 'Oshaw' is a corruption of the -ean in ocean.)+ott(otter)=Ocean otter, or ocean water otter. *Submitted by Knightrunner* Dewott: Dew+ott(otter abbr.)= dew otter, or otter dew. Samurott: Samur(samurai abbr.)+ott(otter abbr.)= samurai otter. Patrat: Pat(as in pack)+rat= Pack rat. Watchog: Watch+og(as in hog, or groundhog)= Watch groundhog, or watch hog. Lillipup: Lilli(an abbreviation for Little)+pup(short for Puppy)=Little Puppy *Submitted by Knightrunner* Herdier: Herd+ier(suffix; also comes as the more used '-eer' as in Engineer, it means 'Concerned with...')=Concerned with herding Submitted by Knightrunner* Stoutland: Stout(brave, stubborn, and resolute, bulky, and heavily built)+land(a play on that some dog breeds are named the "X-land" after the country/location they were bred)=? Purrloin: Purr(sound cats make when happy)+loin(short for purloin, meaning steal)=Happy to steal Submitted by Knightrunner Liepard: Lie+pard(leopard abbr.)= Lying leopard, or just a play on "leopard." Currently in progress... * means unknown for me ** means partial, and unsure definitions. This post has been edited by SmugleafForever: May 3 2011, 06:58 PM -------------------- |

Anyone may contribute to this. If you do, when I list the origin, I will say that it is submitted by you. I am not copying this from anything, I use my own mind. And some dictionaries. Some are obvious, some now. Let's go! Victini**: Vict(victory abbr.)+ini(just a name suffix, like in "Houdini")= *nothing which truly fits here on account of the suffix* Snivy: Sn(short for snake)+ivy= Ivy snake, or snake ivy. Servine: Ser(short for serpent)+vine= Vine serpent, or serpent vine. Serperior: Serp(serpent abbreviation)+erior(as in inferior or superior)= superior serpent, or simply just a play on "superior." Tepig* Pignite: Pig+nite(ignite abbr.)= pig ignite. Emboar: Em(ember abbr.)+boar= ember boar. Oshawott** Dewott: Dew+ott(otter abbr.)= dew otter, or otter dew. Samurott: Samur(samurai abbr.)+ott(otter abbr.)= samurai otter. Patrat**: Pat(as in pack)+rat= Pack rat. Watchog: Watch+og(as in hog, or groundhog)= Watch groundhog, or watch hog. Lillipup* Herdier**: Herd+ier(suffix, as in "crazier" or "zanier")= *nothing which truly fits here on account of the suffix* Stoutland* Purrloin* Liepard: Lie+pard(leopard abbr.)= Lying leopard, or just a play on "leopard." Currently in progress... * means unknown for me ** means partial, and unsure definitions. I hope you don't mind me making a comment. For the ones you have starred I'll give you my input, maybe it'll help a little bit. ^^: Victini: When I see that name, the Vict- is Victory, but in turn, -Tini is also a play on Tiny, thus Victini or Small Victory. Tepig: Te I think is for Temp, or Temperature and Pig is well, pig! Oshawott: This one's a bit harder to figure out. I think that Osha- might be a corruption of the word Ocean. The 'c' in ocean sounds like an 'sh' thus Osh, the 'aw' in 'Oshaw' is a corruption of the -ean in ocean. Oshanott doesn't roll off the tongue as easily as Oshawott. Patrat: I think you're right on this one. So nothing for me to add. Lillipup: Lil' is an abbreviation for Little. Pup is short for Puppy, thus 'Little Puppy' or Lillipup Herdier: Herdier might be a play on 'Herder' or 'Herding' certainly the Herd part of the name is, '-ier' is actually a suffix. '-ier' also comes as the more used '-eer' as in Engineer, it means 'Concerned with...' Thus Herdier literally means "Concerned with Herding". Stoutland: Stout means brave, stubborn, and resolute. It also means bulky, and heavily built. '-land' I think is a play on that some dog breeds are named the "X-land" after the country/location they were bred. Purrloin: Purrloin is a play on Purloin which means to steal. The only change in the name is the added r to turn the word into 'Purr-' a sound cats make when they are happy. So this name basically means 'Happy to Steal.' I hoped this helped with some of your *'s! ^^; -------------------- |

Stoutland makes me think of a play off the word "Scotland" and it does look to me like it's a bit of a Scottish pokemon. That long fur looks a bit like a kilt to me....
Oshawott seems to me like a play off "ocean" plus "water" and "otter" so it's "ocean water otter" to me. Purrloin. Purr, a noise that cats make, and loin is similar to "lion" or loin could be a pun off "feline" Gigalith. Giga means "big" and lith is a suffix meaning something is related to stone. Tympole seems like tympani, a type of drum, and pole as in "tadpole" Palpitoad is "palpitate" or "palpitation" and toad Seismitoad would be seismic and toad. Whimsicott makes me think of Commander Wymsy. On a more serious note, I think it's a combination of "whimsical" and "cotton" Basculin is "bass" and "masculine" maybe... Those are just the most obvious ones to me. Though I would like to know what the heck the meaning of Alomomola is. That name just makes me confused. -------------------- |

I think I found a few:
Deino: A stylized spelling of 'Dino', with an 'e' added to create the German word for one, 'Ein' Zweilious: The -lious could be from 'rebellious' or something else, the Zwei- is the German word for two, 'Zwei' Hydreigon: From Hydra, a mythological creature of Greek mythology, Drei, the German word for three, and the -gon from dragon. I got the knowledge of German from an old song that was taught around where I live (NW Iowa) to the older folks (i.e. grandmothers and grandfathers). Probably circa 1920's. -------------------- I'm also known as Queen_Lugia on SPPf, and Queen-Articuno on dA, as well as a former aspiring trinketer on GPX+, a proud TheRunawayGuys fangirl, a proud participant of Extra Life, and proud supporter of TwitchPlaysPokemon.

Bisharp: Bishop is a rank and sharp because it has blades.

Tepig is actually a pun on tepid which means a moderate temperature, iirc.
Oshawott comes from ocean (Osha), water (w) and otter (ott) Patrat most likely comes from patrol and rat rather than pack. You could just go to Bulbapedia, you know? They explain the names there with much greater detail. :| -------------------- |

I should go and make a large list of all the ones I know instead. -------------------- |

Beheeyem has something to do with behemoth. Now to find out about the extra E and the Y-E-M I believe Beheeyem is a play on words; if you say it out loud, it sounds like "BEM", or bug eyed monster; aka, the aliens most people think of when they think "alien". Similar, its pre-evolution Elgyem sounds like "LGM", or little green monster or something. It makes sense since they're supposed to be the result of the Poke world's Roswell or something. I'm not sure if the spelling means anything. -------------------- |

thanx pinsir..... except the point is that these are more personal revelations than the factual stuff on bulbapedia.
Escavalier = Escargot + Cavalier, I'd think. Because Karrablast stole the shell from a snail (English for Escargot) and now it's become a sort of Cavalier. Sawsbuck... Summer Autumn Winter Spring + Buck (which is another word for a deer, I presume). I like Black/White's Pokemon names, it's just a bunch of them are way too easy without any deep meanings behind their simplicity. The previous gen (Gen IV, that is, cause Gen III had many overly simple ones) was more subtle. Yanmega actually means more than you think it does.... -------------------- |

But, I wouldn't think of that.... Thanks for those. Personal Revelations? ~ EDIT: Oya, I realized just now about Darkrai, incase anyone wants to know. Darkrai = Dark + rai(thunder in japanese) = Dark Thunder (Or something like that.) This post has been edited by SmugleafForever: Jun 29 2011, 11:42 AM -------------------- |
